Why do I lose with an e4 opening?

I don't know why, but everytime I go for an e4 opening, I end up losing. I've only been getting my wins from Queen's Gambit accepted/declined. For some reason I always end up in a better position that way.

A bunch of my last few losses were e4 openings, if you wanted to take a look.

It's not because of the opening at all, it's because your tactics are not good, to put it very mildly.  You need to concentrate more on tactics before even thinking about openings.  I'm sorry if I seem harsh, but that's the truth.

No, I'm aware my tactics are weak, but I was curious as to why I performed better at one opening vs. another.

The only purpose the opening serves, is to get to a playable middle game.

You drop pieces regardless the opening. And since you drop pieces, if you play more e4 games than d4 games you will lose more with e4. It is that simple. Stop dropping pieces.

I think the pieces come into contact earlier in open games so the players have to calculate earlier which leads to mistakes. In closed games it can take a little longer for that to happen. It's just not easy for either side to blunder when White plays some kind of d4, e3 setup.

That makes sense. Thanks!

e4 games are normally more open the tactics are sharper and there are just more of them because the board not closed and the resulting positions are more under blacks control just to many defenses black can play and he will get positions that you are not used to seeing and that have known tactics that black will know and that you will have to find on your on.

TheYellowEye

example if you play d4 c4 QGD right then all the resulting positions are normally going to be in that scope. but if you play e4 black can play the pirc, the caro, the KID, the ruy Lopez, the French, the Sicilian defense, several gambits and many more. so not only are your tactics weak your ability to read the positions needs work.

kingchino54

its true that you sould change your opening to combat e4...and also he/she needs to study...i don't have problems with players using e4!. i welcome it...but i do study moves mentioned by The Yellow Eye!!!!
