Why does white put the rook on b1.

In this position why does white put his rook on b1 is d1 a better sqare for the rook since the center is the main focus

Another reason could be simply just to control the semi open file before you have any chanaces to use it

1)Delay development of black's LSB(in some lines black develops anyway and gives up b7 pawn)

2)Move out of a1-h8 diagonal.

3)Only current semi-open file, plus Rb5 is possible in a couple lines.

Plus it attacks b7. Black can't develop his Bishop for now.

Addendum/Edit: Fixing_A_Hole was faster :)

Make a move that makes NO sense.

The move has already been explained.

I understand that this is a low effort meme post, but the move that Gotham was talking about was different because the pawn on b2 was still there, and here it's not.

Also, chesscom should take a note from real internet forums and lock threads when they get necro'd.

This is a well known position of the Grünfeld Defence. Rb1 is a good move, putting the rook on the open b-file. There are other viable moves in this position: Be3, Bb5+, Bc4, Bd3, Be2, Qa4+, Qd2, h3. Nobody can tell for sure which move is better.

white at some point wants to play d5, and rb1 steps away from the bishop's sight in that case. it seems like b1 is the only square that makes sense as it attacks b7 and therefore makes developing bc8 harder, but in fact in some lines black just gives up b7 anyway to develop pressure with bg4, and sometimes white prefers to play rc1 or rd1 instead, focusing on strengthening the center against possible attacks.

At least castle your king, what the heck is this move?

It's a very god idea to get the rook off the a1-h8 diagonal where the Bg7 is looking at it. That diagonal can open quickly.

Removing the rook from the long diagonal can never be a poor choice. A simple example:

Actually 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 5. e4 Nxc3 6. bxc3 Bg7 7. Nf3 c5 8. Be2 Nc6 9. d5 Bxc3+ 10. Bd2 is playable, but it was never considered dangerous for Black.
