Why is caro kann better than the french defence?

I've played both caro kann and the french defence. Somehow I have a 70% win rate in the caro kann while only 52% in the french. Why? I can almost guarantee that I know french better than the caro kann. Is the fact that my opponents got stronger the problem? Otherwise I don't understand. Advanced variation is better for french (65% against 59%) but the exchange is just trash(48% vs 52%). Maybe thats because I was experimenting with different setups because in August it because 60% for black. Main line is better for caro(64% vs 50%) It honestly seems like the caro kann is just better

Not all openings suite everyone. Seems like the caro kann is perfect for you since you are winning so much.

But that doesn't make french bad.

There are 4 equally strong responses to 1.e4. They are 1...e5, the French, the Sicilian, and the Caro-Kann.

There are numerous factors that can cause a difference in numbers.

1) Stylistic Differences - The Caro-Kann may make more sense to one and the French to someone else.

2) Variance/Standard Deviation - How reliable is your percentage? Have you played 10 games with it or 2000 games with it? A 70% score across 10 games means absolutely nothing. Even the laws of statistics require a minimum of 30 to have a valid sample size at all. Now of you score 70 percent across 2000 games, which is roughly the number of times I have played the Black side of the French Defense on here and I can promise you that you WILL NOT score 70 percent with Black in ANY opening across 2000 games!

Your thesis is USELESS!

Oh, and for the record, across 2091 chess games as Black after 1.e4 e6, my score is 52% (44% White wins, 8% draws, 48% Black wins). Any plus score for Black is phenomenal across 2000+ games. Average score for Black is 46%.

If you are a beginner, or intermediate level player, I'd certainly recommend you to play the Caro-Kann. Not because the French is objectively worse, but because Caro gives you greater freedom of pieces overall, and it is simpler to find good moves and not to get crushed.
Also, this thing with percentages is really interesting. I notice how more and more people come to me with such information, like it means something. Don't waste your time on it.

I agree with post #2, one opening that suits one person may not suit another, due to different playing styles.

For example, I'm better at 1...e5 over the Sicilian, but that doesn't mean it's objectively any better; just that my playing style is better fit for 1...e5.
