Bologan has also played it from time to time.
why the philidor?

Philidor is playable and not so bad, but it's nonsense that it's better than 2. ...Nc6. It is tough to crack but too passive to pose serious problems to the White. Here is a game I recently played against it:

Anything new in the Philidor's Defense? any new variation...etc?
I think this is the only thing that is new about the Philidor's Defense

I'm not sure if this is new, but I've been seeing it more and more lately, an attempt by White to play an early f4 via 1. e4 d6 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 or even 1. e4 d6 2. f4. I think on Bologan's recent DVD he advocates 3..d5 or 2..d5, which I tried a few times, transposing to an Alekhine's Defense variation (!) after 1. e4 d6 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 d5 4. e5 Ne4 5. d3 Nxc3 6. bxc3 c5 7. d4
Oh, and there is the recent Bologan DVD

The early f4 variations for white aren't that dangerous i think. In "The Philidor Files" by christian bauer he covers all the different ways that white can deviate from the main lines, and i don't think that there are any lines that promises white more than his normal opening advantage if black knows how to play the positions. Besides that, there are a lot of different variations in the philidor that black can play, so saying that it's just passive isn't exactly true as there are some variations that are more aggressive, like the Larsen variation og the counter gambit as mentioned before. :) <3 Philidor!
nice matches ......
