Will IM pfren ever become a GM?

Maybe?

Of course he can. It probably takes some major rescheduling in ones life though.

Usually, mastery refines with age. Chess is a cruel game, some would say. I say it's about adapting. That darn scale is always busy. "What scale?" You ask. You know, the one we all must...

He won't ever become a GM because he doesn't want to. But if he wanted he probably could become a GM years before, but now - no way, he's too old for that. You know the difference between IM or GM is a really huge difference. I can even say this difference is even bigger than the difference between 1500 and 2000 elo.

" You know the difference between IM or GM is a really huge"

Not true at all! The difference between an IM and an elite, 2750+ GM is huge, but IM's frequently beat "ordinary" GMs in tournament play, and there are quite a few IM's with higher ELO ratings than a lot of GMs. There's no magic line that separates a strong IM from an average GM

I can provide you an example. Ben Finegold (a famous GM here on chess.com) became an IM when he was 20 (1990), and he only became a GM when he turned 40 (2009).

Also there is one more separation between IM and GM. FMs and IMs usually have full-time job, which is not connected with chess (science, business or any possible job...). But GMs are usually concentrated on chess 24/7. For example, little tricky things in openings which work against CMs or IMs, don't work against GMs because they have a lot of time to study openings. I can give you billions of examples like this one to prove my point if you want to wink.png

Who is pfren.

I know all about Ben Finegold. For many years he was often called "The World's Strongest IM." But during those years he had dozens of tournament wins over GMs. So I'm not sure that helps your point. Most GMs are a bit stronger than most IMs, but there are plenty of exceptions. The difference in playing strength between a 2500-rated IM and a 2500-rated GM is generally around zero!

I believe IMpfren can become GM. All he needs is physical conditioning. He needs a good fitness instructor.

If I was an IM, I also would be reluctant to treat random internet idiots and goombahs as equals.

A more interesting question: will IM pfren ever adopt a cat avatar?

blueemu

No, I'm just a talented non-entity.

IRL I was rated around 2040 OTB back in the 1980s. Stopped playing chess for about 30 years. Started again a few years ago, but only online.

He's already halfway there with his whiskers.  Perhaps our resident kitteh can help him with an avatar.

Why would pfren adopt cat avatar. After training with Arnold for few years, he should use this.

I bet pfren will win the World Chess Championship using heavy physical chess pieces weighing from 30 kg (pawn) to 80 kg (king and queen). Excuse my unproportional picture.

6000 pounds need a crane XD. Another crazy proposal. Chess set below filled with Greek wine.

For Handicap match, the lower rated drinks beer while the higher rated drinks vodka.
