Chess Incomes?

In poker tournaments you see amateurs winning even with top pros playing, I have NEVER seen this in chess, have you ? What does this mean ? Well, for me it means there is a LOT more luck in poker than there is in chess.

As to other results - the phrase was "anything less than bronze is a failure, why should the Federation reward you for that?"

Wow...sounds like somebody's dad (browbeating them for an unmown lawn or something).

Just out of curiosity, Natalia, are you actually able to be a professional player?  Or do you have to have a day job as a supplement (like the rest of us)?

Apart from studying at the university, I'm a full-time chess pro. And have always been, i.e. never worked as a lawyer (I'm an MA in Law). Now, when I'm a top-20 player, it's easier. Before things used to be harder. Smile

I think chess requires more skill and there is no luck (your opponent blundering isn't the same thing). However, in the long term over 500,000+ hands, there is also little luck in poker. Amateurs don't understand that and think that anyone can win... and that's true on a given day but not overall. Still, I think this might be something that attracts them. On the other hand, an amateur knows he has almost no chance to win against a GM. There's actually a book on this: How to Beat a Grandmaster: Secrets Every Amateur Should Know About Playing the Pros but I don't know if it's good.

High variance = high viewership

This is why poker > chess, NCAA March Madness > NBA Playoffs, and NFL Playoffs> NHL and MLB post-season

My latest dream was about a giant robot that was going to wipe us all out.

There may be something to there being a difference between girls and boys.

However, most of his earnings have come from stocks and shares, not chess. It is a shame.

I guess Karpov is richer though.

Doesn't much of Karpov's wealth come from investments that have done well for him ?

In the middle ages chess was played as a gambling game. You would roll the dice to pick which piece you would have to move. This would make it more exciting for the masses. How would you like to see Anand vs Topolov under those rules?
