Thanks for the links.
I am surprise of the evaluate elo of the players od the 19th. I was thinking there were more under 2400 elo than above 2600.
This chessbase article describes a non-rating method of comparing players of different eras.

(Morphy is mentioned but only in the "hook".)
There were no Elo ratings put in place before 1970.
So Elo wasn't providing ratings list for international players well before then!?
I didn't know that you were referencing TalDude's link at all. You didn't indicate this so I didn't assume it.
Miscommunication I guess.
I see what you're saying but I didn't interpret the OP's post as referencing actual Elo ratings as opposed to estimated ones.
Thanks for the links.

Remember that the ratings are in comparison to other people at that time. It is not an absolute scale like temperature or something. If Morphy was estimated at 2600 it doesn't mean that he would be playing as well as a 2600 today. It is a relative scale.
Take Sonas' figures in the same light; they reflect relative dominance within a time period. They are in no way absolute measures of strength.
Hello,
Does someone know where we can find the elo of the old players ?
Like Morphy or Steinitz.
My aim is to play again there games but a player who is like 2200-2300 elo now.
Please.
