I read that there is strong evidence that some of the same genes that bring about greatness in math, (and also chess) can also bring on schizophrenia.

Chess players, by definition, have a major mental disorder. For beginner players it's called Pawneatingenia, for advanced players - Ratingchasingnia, for world-class players - Tournamentia.

Comments here have been pretty funny.

It seems like the OP is trying to figure out what made 2 of the greatest players ever such poor losers? "Searching for Bobby Fischer" (the movie) seems to argue that it is Fischer's hatred of losing and air of superiority that made him World Chess Champion.

What does OP mean?

 But pawns taste so GOOD!

I am not aware of Fischer having a reputation as a " sore loser". Is there any evidence to support this ? There is more evidence against Kasparov in this area , to my knowledge.

It seems noone knows for sure who Fischer's father was ... maybe not even his mother ?!  Did she sleep around that much ?!  Bobby never had a chance imo coming from the home into which he was born.

There seems to be a few misconceptions here. Fischer wasn't a sore loser as far as I know, but he is bordering on insane, I agree with that. Kasparov on the other hand is a horribly sore loser but isn't even close to being insane. There's no correlation between being a sore loser and insane. I also saw chucky being mentioned. He is simply not insane, he might seem a little off but come on, being insane is something serious. He takes defeats very hard but not like Kasparov or Korchnoi I guess, he just kicks around walls Smile.

The_Pyropractor

I dont know about Fischer, but Kasparov was mad about the FIDE rules... and he is still the best player around, as he beat Anatoly Karpov

When did being a sore loser suddenly make you insane? If someone actually cares about winning they'll always be a bit of a sore loser on the inside. I guess 95% of the world is insane Frown. That explains a lot Cool

"Original Poster" if referring to the individual who started the thread, "Original Post" if referring to the comment itself.

You use a non clinical word "insane" to describe a myriad of possible "mental disorders?"Insane being a non clinical word to describe a brain abnormality, which by rote also describes your inability to posit such a question? Sore loser is a street term to mean you can't describe the machinations of someone who is more passionate or dedicated then yourself?

If you're going to attempt to sound intelligent, well versed in vocabulary, and come off as disingenuous (whether by accident or intentionally), then it might be a good idea to know the proper use of the words "then" and "than". The former is a function of a timeline, while the latter is a function of comparison. Examples:

I did this first and then I did that.

I am more dedicated than you.

I've no clue what you mean.

Regarding Fischer as insane is being charitable. It creates some excuse for his antisemitism, his treasonable behavior, and his defiance of the law. Kasparov, on the other hand, wore the mantle of World Champion with dignity for many years. If his pursuit of political reform in Russia is somewhat quixotic, that is the worst that can be said about him.

To answer Nimzovitch's question, "Why must I lose to this %$#$%%^^ idiot!" is because he's an idiot himself.

well, they were certainly sore losers.

So? That doesn't make them "insane". Kasparov IMO is anything but "insane".

yeah, well he certainly wasn't the nicest person to beat. Sore loser.

And your point is?

king_warrior

Kasparov insane? Yeah very funny...

you think these guys are sore losers?> what all great athletes have in common, they hate to lose. Vince Lombardi, now there was a sore loser. Bill Russell wanted to win so badly, he'd throw up before games.

goldendog

It's been a super thread but I threw up a little there too.

lol. Well, it's just a game. Nothing to be upset about. Of course, I'm not a GM or a WCC.

If people want to insult the guy just do it. All this beading around the bush is just stupid... No creativity or anything... Fischer went mad because he was a sore loser? WTF??? Now a thread about resigning - that would be more innovative...

lol

Speak for yourself. Of course for these guys it's not "just a game".
