Easily the most out of shape tussler at the tournament, the 'interesting' American 'tilter' hasn't exactly been 'improving!' The blank gaze deepening, vulnerability clearly visible, he was quickly off to an abysmal start. After a disheartening Armageddon defeat to Master Mozart, the overextended underdog was clearly hurting. But a wounded beast is the most dangerous, they say, and the full brunt of his built-up frustration was soon set free upon an unfortunate Frenchman.

Yet just shy of a miraculous return, he was stopped short in his tracks by a cunning Comeback-craftsman. Counterplay against the crafty Kazakh simply could not succeed, and Hikaro-Kann begrudgingly concluded the competition with just 25 grand. 

The sun setting prematurely on his Toronto tour, he turns his eyes south hoping for a brighter 'Sunrise.' Whether or not Kramnik's poisonous punditry has indeed wounded the Samurai, still remains unknown. But be what it may, he's got some serious self-assessment to do if he's to pull out of this slump.
