You need to think of something new. Stop trying to censor people with silly posts.

Says the guy telling someone what not to post....

Reb's just as free to ignore your post as you are his.  I think you're definition of censorship needs to be rechecked.

When did I tell somebody what not to post? If you're referring to the one here, It's been seen many times before.

I don't remember reading anything confirming that Fischer was mentally ill. Isn't that just pure speculation? Are all the Terrorists, and Muslim Fanatics mentally ill as well? If one says something off-beat and unacceptable to the norm...does that mean they are mentally ill? Could it be that he just said exactly how he felt? Could it be that he was in full control when he said all those "crazy" things?

How do I report Reb for spamming? I think once per thread is more than enough.

That's my feeling on the matter.

p.s. insert Christian Fanatics, and Jewish Fanatics... There I feel betterSmile

Agreed -- once again, a Fischer thread degenerates into armchair psychology based on rumour and speculation.

The Fischer pile-on gets tiresome quickly.

I don't like Fischer at all, for the sexist and racist thoughts of him. But I never believed he deserved the torture.

And I totally agree with what he said about the magical "enemy combatant" label in this video. It's a very nice and accurate description of what many of adversaries of government and the state go through, and it's the same in almost every country, it takes literally a few words to end someone's whole identity, if they come out from the "right" people's mouth. What's worse is that a vast majority of public instantly follow those words.

Agreed. "Enemy combatants", "militants", "terrorists", "extremists". Once "identified" by the government as such, everyone believes the government is protecting you from these "things". The person no longer has rights, and nobody inquires how this person, or these people, fall under those labels. Absurd and tragic.

Posting in big red letters is the Internet equivalent of screaming at the top of your voice.  Its not much of a reasoned argument, and you seem to yell it at anyone who has anything negative to say about Fischer.  I have no problem with Fischer as a player, he is certainly among the greatest of the great.  I do have a problem with rabid anti-semites, however.  Either Fischer was deeply ill in his later life, and could not manage to do better, or if he was not ill he was a horrible, horrible, person with despicable views.  This is not hate, it is the blunt truth.  Can you honestly defend the hateful racist nonsense he would rant about in his later years?  No reasonable person can.  Personally, I see Fischer as a tragic figure, a genius who ended up being very disturbed and having a difficult life because of it.  Again, that is not hate.  Its an honest assessment of a public figure who is incredibly important in the development of modern chess.

Bobby Fischer was a wacko.

Continually persecuting someone, even after their death, is a sure sign of hate for the persecuted. You may "excuse" it anyway you like if it relieves your conscience.

My conscience needs no relief.  Denouncing racism and anti-semitism is something I will proudly do.  Reb, do you hate jews and blacks yourself, or do you just think its ok for Fisher to hate them because he was a strong chess player?  Fischer caused his own problems.  He didn't have to quit chess, and he went into his second match with Spasky fully informed that he was breaking U.S. law by doing so.  Either he though he was above the law, or simply didn't care.  Either way the consequences were completely foreseeable.  You dont have to be a grandmaster to see how that endgame plays out.

Once again, I will say that we may understand some of Fischers actions through the light of the fact that many people consider him mentally ill in his later years.  If he wasn't, then I am still waiting to hear justification of his actions.  Anyone normal person making the kind of statements Fischer did would be considered a crank and a hate monger.  How does Fischer's skill with a board game excuse behavior that would be considered unexcusable from anyone else?

TheOldReb

I am not aware that Fischer hated blacks. What proof do you have that he did ?  In any event some say Fischer also hated Americans at the end of his life, did he ? I think its gullible to believe everything you hear, especially when it comes from those he " hated ". In any event , Fischer is a chess hero and this is a chess server so while some may not wish to praise him ( for his chess ) due to his human failings others do...  obviously. I simply grow sick of people who are ALWAYS tearing him down.

TheGrobe

Like so much else in these threads it's rumour and speculation.

Also, Fischer may have hated the American government because of his perceived persecution (and I don't know whether he did or he didn't) but it's important to recognize that this is not the same thing as hating Americans.
