If you spend time thinking about your every move and testing it against various possible replies by your opponent and not to mention the emotional reaction you may get when you saw certain continuations, it is likely that you will remember the moves in the game. However, study shows that chess players' memory skill normally does not extend to other fields.
While the part of memory may be true to a certain extent, I have noticed my ability doing my job, to retain more information at one time and plan further ahead, more concretely, after I started playing chess daily about a year and 2 months ago. Though these particular things aren't completely predicated upon memory, they are certainly dependent on it to some degree. In order to hold the ideas abstractly,in the forefront of my mind consider them in conjunction and then make key decisions, in order to establish a workable plan afterward...all while not necessarily recording any of the data...that definitely requires memory, that I know I didn't have before...
