It's different with these two; they have a playing record between them. Karpov has the edge and Spassky was past his prime while Karpov was either in or entering his.
Karpov vs. Spassky

i agree with you goldendog, but................. karpov would overpower him nevertheless, regardless of what other people may think. I thin.... I know that karpov would be too good for him if they were both in their prime.

Karpov would not have crushed Spassky, either you're overrating Karpov or you think Spassky was just another ordinary player.

Spassky decended from his peak very fast, after he attained the World championship, he started declining straight away. And he never seriously bounced back up again afterwards.
And Karpov has a plus score vs Spassky, so I´m not sure why this is even discussed, it´s already there, black on white.

Spassky of 73 would have to play Karpov of 87 to make their ages matchup. More interesting would be Spassky of the early 60s vs Karpov in 73.

I am a Spassky fan so must go to bat for Boris. I will just remind you that Spassky won the USSR championship of 1973 ( one of the strongest ever ) and Karpov was playing in it too. I would say he bounced back in a serious way after losing to Fischer only 1 year earlier.

Spassky had a universal style and played many great attacking games. He was already past his prime when he played Fisher but still did relatively well. As much as I admire and like Spassky I have to concede that Karpov was clearly the stronger player. I think part of the reason is that although Spassky had great natural talent he was not as driven and ruthless as Karpov.
How about Karpov versus Spassky, it's almost like another version of Kasparov-Fischer, only with slightly less popular people.
