Nakamura was born in Japan and moved to the USA when he was 2 years old.
So's case is worse, because he was born and raised in the Philippines, and changed federations in 2014
At least Caruana was born in the USA.

And Bobby Fischer was an american?
lol
I'm fairly certain that Illinois was part of the United States of America by 1943.

Nakamura's mother is American. He's as American as Caruana is.
And yes, Nakamura is American. His mother was American, he's considered a US citizen from birth, and he grew up in America. He's as American as anyone.
(And I realize that this is a troll thread, but this topic comes up quite a bit from ignorant sh*theads with no real understanding of what America is, who then boastfully make proclaimations about who is and isn't American.)
Mmm, I think he was simply under an arrest order by the US government, therefore he couldn't be back there.

I have a scholarship.
Was'nt Bobby exiled from the us after 9-11 or that "illegal" chess match in Russia?
In the end making him unamerican?
The 1992 rematch against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia (not Russia) was not legal for Bobby, as Yugoslavia was under a UN embargo at the time. The US State Department sent Bobby a letter advising him against participating. Bobby went through with it anyway and from then on was unable to return to the US without fear of legal sanctions. Still he traveled all over the world for year on a US passport and the US government showed no signs of persuing the matter. After 9/11 Bobby became much more vocal in his anti-US tirads.
I guess finally someone with say-so got fed up and the US State Department revoked his passport. Hence he got arrested in Japan for trying to enter that country on an invalid passport. Japan was in a bit of a conundrum, as the US wanted him extradited to face whatever charges. However Bobby had publically renounced his US citizenship, and I guess Japan didn't want to extradite a stateless person. Finally Iceland granted him honorary citizenship, so Japan sent him to Iceland where he lived out his final few years. After his death the US State Department claimed that since Bobby Fischer, despite his public renunciation, had never filed the proper paperwork (governments do love paperwork) to adbicate his citizenship, so he died a US citizen.
Yet they play for the USA.
