He definitely ran out of steam couple of years back. None of the monthly chess periodicals I subscribe to ever mentioned the alleged illness, though. It could be just burnout, similar to Topalov's recent slump.
What happened to Moro?

Moro will be back for sure. And his fans will be waiting to watch his fireworks display on the board.
Moro seems to be flying well under the radar these days unfortunately. I really enjoyed playing through his games because when it comes to sheer entertainment on the 64 squares Moro is one of the best. I hope he can find a way to return to form as he has had some spectacular games but the rumors of a long running undisclosed illness coupled with rumors that he is done with professional chess do not leave much room for any hope of a Moro comeback. Anyone have any idea of what's up with Moro?
