according to the FIDE, the best chess player is currently Viswanathan Anand of India

in my personal opinion, Garry Kasparov is by far the best chess player currently and of all time

Fischer hands down.  What Fischer overcame is 100x what Kasparov faced.  Fischer, at his peak, was better than Kasparov.  Fischer did more for the game than any other player.  In all honesty, however, Carlsen will probably surpass Fischer.

I retract my opinion.  Kasparov clearly crushed Spassky by winning 50% of his games against him.  Also, Kasparov defeated the American chess machine all on his own at the height of the Cold War.
