Is it possible that India lacks other entertainment? Let's see if the results of the Olympic Games in India can illustrate this point.
Why are players from india so good
There are 1.4 billion of them
And thats just in their own country
They stay active, very busy.
You see, once there was a king called Vasudeva. He had a daughter named Rajarajeshwari(Goddess Parvati in disguise). She learned the game Chaturanga and became a strong player. King Vasudeva told that whoever beats his daughter will become her husband. A saint(Lord Shiva in disguise) came. He played with her in the Sathuranga Vallabanthar temple and beat her.
I thought I am the only one noticing it
noticing what
also you realize anyone can have any flag right???
@AGC-Gambit_YT, you are right. I am Indian but once I had an UAE flag.
They have good players...they have not so good players.

yeah, look at my flag lol
that's real, and the same on the other end, but it's kind of true
and when there is quantity, there is a lack of quality in the majority of Indian chess players.
This discussion is so misinterpreted.
Every country has a certain amount of good players, with the percentage fairly being the same in all countries. India just has - 1. A higher population 2. Influence from government, internet and society (It's a myth but chess players are considered smart in India)
There is no reason to be a supporter of one side of this discussion - "India sucks at chess" or "India is the best at chess". In fact, there's no quantifiable way to measure the AVERAGE skill level or smth similar. In my opinion, skill in chess in India AS A WHOLE (including all ratings) is slightly below average because a noticeable percentage of players don't even enjoy chess and just do it because of societal pressure, but skill after a certain level is above average in India just because of the sheer amount of time people dedicate to it, including OTB tourneys and practice.
Of course you could look at your personal statistics like someone in this thread earlier did I think, which is a completely valid opinion from your perspective, but this could change either way higher or lower down the rating tiers.
Also any points made here about "Indian lifestyle" or "Indian history" or "Indian mentality" have barely any impact, 90% of chess players don't even care, they just play it cuz it's fun.
