All those players (excluding Giri) are far older and have had much longer careers so far so they are standard go-to names, but MVL is a fantastic player who you already hear a lot about in Europe but you'll surely be hearing loads about in the future!
Why is it we never hear of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave even though he's in the top 10

I guess you were right. He's starting to get into chess news.
Lately we've been hearing of him a lot and he is #9 now. But who you never hear of is Leinier Dominguez the cuban super GM who went from #10-#13.
He's an awesome player. Really fast calculator as I saw in some commentary. You can watch him at the Sinquefield Cup along with other great players this starting this Wednesday!

thx for posting date of next tournament.
His name is really long. If his name were Max Smith he'd be a lot more popular.
Bingo. The whole world is ADD. By the time someone finishes reading or pronouncing the name, he's already forgotten the guy. He needs to start going by Max Lagrave.

He is very famous in Spain (among chess fans, of course). But I suppose it's because he is Latinoamerican.
Carlsen has gotta be feeling glum after missing Qd3 for a potential win... Come on Nakamura , tomorrow is your big chance to score your first win in classical chess against Magnus.. a lot of people are rooting for you Hikaru .
His game today looked so strong till 13).....Nb4 was played. exciting chess for sure, not dull by any means.
Giri has a yearly invitation to Wijk aan Zee, no wonder he is more well known than MVL.
By the way MVL has had couple of bad years (2010-2011...) where he drop from 2730 to 2680. He is coming back since 2011.

He likes to just go by MVL.
He gave a lecture at Gibraltar this or last year I believe (some great game with him competely imprisoning two pieces), and Finegold has a mancrush on him. Plus MVL is a nice abbreviation. I hear much more about him than people like Dominguez & Adams (or even So, but that'll be different in the states probably).

Well, the game MVL-Ding Liren from the Alekhine Memorial was splendid !
Vachier-Lagrave is currently ranked number 10 right now, yet we hear of players such as Gelfand, Svidler, Mamedyarov, Giri and Adams more often than we hear about someone who is ranked higher than those people?
