White can play 1. Nf3 on their first move and then play 2. Ng5 threatening to blow up black's kingside, or even worse, 2. Ne5 and then threaten to blow up the black king no matter what.
1... f3 seems like a reasonable way to prevent white from advancing the knight to either g5 or e5 but at the same time that opens up the king on the h5-e8 diagonal.
Is 1...f3 the best response for Black? While it stops the immediate knight threats on g5 and e5, doesn't it weaken Black's king position significantly? Are there other ways to develop the pieces and defend the kingside without such a risky pawn move?
