Awesome Games of Trice’s Chess (Gothic)

Sort:

Ed Trice is the inventor of Gothic Chess. I’m his opponent in a multiple game match now. Some of these are from the match. I’m the best in his variant in England. He’s the best in his variant in the USA. So the games are tough brawls.

This game is the most tactically ornate game that I have seen. White allows two pieces to hang from pawn threats simultaneously. Furthermore, the Archbishop is able to issue a simultaneous skewer and fork of all three supermajors. This has never occurred before. Not only that, two minor pieces hang for a second time, and the tactic isn't even finished yet!

Just when I think I'm beginning to understand this variant a little better, I see a game like this. Then I realize I am a noob at best.

This was a complex game with deep traps set. Just when a way out appeared, that solution had another trap lying in wait. I just exhausted my time and had to move without a completely tested plan. In our match resigning prior to move 30 is not permitted.

I don't see this game on the game archive at TricesChess.com does anyone know where it is?

Letchworthshire

It’s the very last game at the bottom of page https://triceschess.com/articles_04.shtml you might have to clear your browser cache or refresh that page.

What is variants.world I keep hearing about?

I finally beat him with a solo smothered Archbishop checkmate.

Does it count as a 'solo' mate when another piece is also denying access to a king's flight square? The chancellor keeps the king off of i8 also.

That's a great question. I would generally say no, though. happy

It's just Capablanca Chess with the starting position altered slightly to call it something new. I'd rather play Capablanca Chess.
