I think this would be an interesting substitute for castling: either guard can move directly next to the king on its first move, as long as there are no pieces between them.

Yes, I think that's a really good idea. I might mention it later in the infinite chess club to see what others think. It might also be good to let the king jump over the guard, for possible even better protection.
If either @abstractcube or @KnockKnockItstheFBI wants to play Formation Chess (a type of infinite chess) check (((here))). I can mod.
