Is a variant like this possible?

The picture below is a vague idea of the variant I want to create, and the arrows are showing the pawns should move. The only problem is that since it's 4 players the green and blue pawns move sideways. I've tried using sideways pawns but then the blue and green pawns can't capture normally... Let me know if you guys have any ideas on how to do this.

usually its red + yellow and blue + green, maybe you could swap that

Yeah you can easily swap the team colors, the problem is just the way the pawns are moving, the green and blue pawns are moving sideways...

Sideways pawns exist in Chinese Chess.

Just play Western Chess and Chinese Chess as a triathlon, with Backgammon as a tie breaker.
