I'm taking a break from my games, so I might go quiet for a week  Need a break, chess is starting to feel like a chore rather than a hobby. I get like that sometimes, I'll play poker for a week and then remember how chess isn't nearly as stressful.

Tug, I used to love to play poker, had a weekly game with friends, Monday nights every week, quarter ante stuff, maximum bet maybe $5, and often Monday Night Football would be on in the background.

Some of the "pots" would get really large, especially when playing Baseball.  All sorts of variations; five card stud, draw, 7 card stud, etc.

Miss those days a lot!

I don't understand that hate from Ry for Nf3, it's literally the most commonly played move for white here. I guess Ry is anti-book.

I forgot to respond to this, but I almost never play the book lines lo

When it comes to regular (online) chess, I definitely like using a database. My rating improved remarkably when I discovered databases. The problem with not using one is that you're likely to often find yourself in inferior positions against otherwise equal players. I have a box full of opening (actual) books too, though I've never really read them properly because I have internet resources which are easier to use.

I'm fine with quickly getting off book in OTB games because our opponent cannot use a db to take advantage of inaccuracies in the opening. But on the internet it's a different world.

Bob, I miss live poker with the boys too, it's been a long time since I had such a game. I exclusively play online now, though I at least don't feel bad about taking money from my friends haha.

In this variant, atttack is the name of the game. Developing a quick attack on the kingside is likely to help.

So

Options are

h4

Be3

Nf3

and Qd3

Bg5 is also perfectly fine. If h6 then retreat to e3 and black's pawns are slightly worse.

GP

Bg5 is the theory line, forgot about that

Nf3 is by far the most common move here, and is probably what I'd play if it were regular chess.  It basically transposes into what I was suggesting last move, since Martin played d6.

captaintugwash

I think you're right that h4 is too much. Database doesn't like it, it's handing black the advantage. Against weaker players than Martin I would like it a lot more.

What's your plan with the knight ry? It's got to come to f3 sooner or later.

Tja_05

I actually kinda like h4.

Tja_05

But we still have to be careful, because Martin hasn't started an event yet.

Chess_Pro2

I like 6. Bg5 here and it's the move I'll vote for. It's the second most popular move here (in regular chess) and it's very flexible.

At first I thought 6. Nf3 (transposing to the main line KID) would be completely fine here. But now I'm not so sure. In that line both players usually castle kingside, white attacks on the queenside and black attacks on the kingside (where our king is). Because black attacks our king and we attack on the queenside (where his king isn't) he might be able to check us more than we can check him (which would be bad with the current event).

I'm not saying 6. Nf3 is definitely a bad move here (I don't know whether it's good or bad); it might still be completely fine. But we should think about what we're getting ourselves into before we play it (if we decide to play it).

Keep it on g1 for awhile. Probably goes to h3 after h4 h5

rychessmaster1

I vote bg5

Tja_05

Ya same

Liked Chess_Pro2's analysis logic…

I vote 6. Bg5.

rychessmaster1

So d5?
