Unwinnable game in custom variants

I was messing with variants and made a custom variant that I played with a friend, but no matter what we did, the king could never be taken in any way. It didn't matter if it was in check or mate so the game ended via time, but we were just wondering what was happening. Does anyone know or are we just stupid? Also spells never showed up, don't know why. The rules were Casual game, Atomic, Crazyhouse, Game with magic spell, Any Capture, Sideways, Torpedo, Duck Chess, Allow passing your turn, and Paradigm Chess30.
