The best "variant" is not a "variant". It is not a descendant of chess but a cognate of chess.
Chaturanga has 2 descendants,
The chess that we have here, I'll call Western Chess.
And Chinese Chess.
Shogi, for example, is a descendant of Chinese Chess, and also not as popular as its progenitor.
