How is it "still chess" if it is not chess?!? They took this game, called chess, which a lot of people play, and they decided to modify it. They didn't make "a new version of chess", they just made a different game. That game wasn't even called chess, because it wasn't chess, and the great person who came up with that was smart enough to understand that, so he decided to name it after himself (as the person to make it) as Fischer Random. Then some people at chess.com decided to spice up their website by adding all of the similar to chess games. They decided to make them all have chess in the name for some reason so the renamed Fischer Random to Chess 960. But it is not chess! It is just similar to chess.
For example, we have Monopoly. Everybody has heard of Monopoly. There are many versions of Monopoly, because they have the exact same rules, they just look different. We have Star Wars Monopoly, Millenniumopoly, Normal Monopoly, and bankers Monopoly. But we also have a game that is not Monopoly, but is was based of Monopoly, called Monopoly Cheaters Edition, that has different rules and stuff. It is similar to Monopoly, but it is not Monopoly. If someone was to say "how many games have you won in all of the Monopoly's?", they would probably be referring to all the games with Monopoly in the name, including Cheaters Edition.
If you want different versions of chess, there is Marvel chess and Star Wars chess, which look different, but they are still the same game. This is how all of the games with chess in the name originated:

Yes they took chess and then they modified it to make a different game yes I agree.
Chess is chess, but chess is not chess 960 because they are DIFFERENT GAMES!

If you are a grandmaster in chess 960 that does not mean your a grandmaster in regular, famously known, classical non-modified chess. If I am a grandmaster in poker that does not mean I'm a grandmaster in backgamon
Tell me one more thing; why in the whole wide world is it called chess960 than?
I have asked the person with the highest rating for Daily 960 to see what he thinks. He is a CM as well @stepanosinovsky.
It's called chess 960 because it's somewhat related to chess and so the owners of chess.com decided to name it chess 960 instead of Fischer random because they want it to have chess in the name for people to think it's related to chess and it belongs in chess.com.
Oh I guess that makes since and please don't cuss.
