Yes perfectly legal, and a pain in the ass for me.

Sorry to interrupt the game to ask this...

What happens if a piece next to the white tree is captured by black? (the pawn on f2, in this game, would be an example). Does white have to move a piece next to the tree? For example, would white be forced to play one of Ng3, Bg3, Bh2, Rdg1, Rid1, Tg3 or Th3? And what if he cannot, if white has no moves that meet the condtition of having a piece orthagonal to the tree? Is this stalemate, since white has no legal move?

Another aspect is this.., imagine if capturing f2 delivered check... white now has two obligations... to defend check, and to ensure the tree is not abandoned. What if he has no move that meets both of these obligations? Does he move out of check and the game continues? Is it checkmate? Or stalemate?

I've tried to ask all my questions in one post!

"What happens if a piece next to the white tree is captured by black? (the pawn on f2, in this game, would be an example). Does white have to move a piece next to the tree? For example, would white be forced to play one of Ng3, Bg3, Bh2, Rdg1, Rid1, Tg3 or Th3?"
Answer: Correct. White has this obligation.

"And what if he cannot, if white has no moves that meet the condtition of having a piece orthagonal to the tree? Is this stalemate, since white has no legal move?"
Answer: Black wins. It follows from this part of my OP: "If a player is not in check, and has an abandoned Tree, and has no legal move to reconnect to his/her Tree, then it is not stalemate, but that player loses."

"Another aspect is this.., imagine if capturing f2 delivered check... white now has two obligations... to defend check, and to ensure the tree is not abandoned. What if he has no move that meets both of these obligations? Does he move out of check and the game continues? Is it checkmate? Or stalemate?"
Answer: White loses. Because he would be in check. Any move that doesn't reconnect the Tree is illegal. So without a legal move to undo the check, it is mate.

@captaintugwash, the questions and explanations are useful, but basically I think that it all follows from my original description and that I don't need to adjust that.

captaintugwash

Yeah sorry I didn't read quite as thoroughly as I thought. Thanks for the reply.

@rychessmaster1, can I include another piece apart from the Hunter? I don't think that you like the Angel, but what about the Xiangqi Cannon? Or maybe just another Guard?
