Event Chess Game (vickalan - Martin0)

Yes, the rooks are really slow moving. It takes two moves to go one square diagonally toward the center of the board - even a pawn often makes more progress! But there's plenty of pawns and knights on the board - which don't capture rooks, so this is "far" from a normal chess mid-game.happy.png

Can I play a game?

I'm already in a few games so I better not add another game now. Not sure if Martin0 wants to add another game. But I can play later, after I finish one or two games. I'm currently playing:
1) this game
2) waterloo against HorusTheThird
3) chess on an infinite plane against friedmelon
4) bulldog against JohnHS.

5) bulldog chess with ball against you.happy.png

@togepi2468, I can play with you if you want.

@vickalan, don't forget our epic bulldog championship game that should start eventually.

Yes, I have a habit of sometimes starting too many games at the same time. But I really look forward to playing you in bulldog with witch for the crown.😲

As soon as I finish any one game I'll play you in bulldog. That's the main reason I didn't start a game with togepi2468 (even though I like Event chess a lot).

Many times a game will end sooner than expected. (Mating combinations sometimes appear sooner than either opponent had expected, or an opponent will resign before you expect it, or sometimes someone is a no-show). So although all my games "appear" to be in the mid-game, I think we'll be playing for the bulldog crown pretty soon.😈

(btw, as of right now, I don't see a fast ending in this game, but things can change quickly. And although I really doubt it, maybe there is a small chance you'll end up without enough material for a checkmate. That's one of the reasons I'm enjoying this game).

I think one fun exercise would be to mate with 2 of these rooks against a king. The rooks move so slow I would be slightly worried of the 50 move rule, but I think it would be fine as long as you don't make mistakes that would delay the mate too much.

I didn't analyze it yet but the best strategy for a RRK vs K might be to ignore one of the rooks, and play a RK vs K ending. It's not an obvious mating strategy, but fairly easy to learn, and I think can still be played with this game's rooks.

Like you say, it might be a fun exercise to try (or confirm) later.

I don't quite see how you would do that with just one rook. You can checkmate with just one rook, but forcing the king to the corner is another issue.

After I think about it I think you're right. It is possible to checkmate with normal RK against K (from any position), but it probably cannot be done with this type of rook. That mate requires the rook controlling complete files and ranks (or at least 2 or 3 squares in a line).

These rooks only control 1 square in 3 directions, so the opposing king can probably keep slipping around and avoid being pushed to a corner.

(btw, I also realized that these rooks are "directional" - a rare feature in chess pieces. The only other normal piece that is directional are pawns. "Directionality" might be a feature that should be used more often in variant chess pieces. In a way, the rooks get less powerful as they move up, because they are "using up" their 2-move jumps, and can't do it anymore unless they use two moves to go back again).

Ok, my move:

Yeah there are some interesting stuff that can be done with directional pieces. Another feature I am using in one variant is what direction the knights are facing (since you can turn them around and look in whatever direction you want with real pieces). I would need to add an arrow or something to represent that in diagrams.

Ok, I resign.

You can easily hoover up all my pieces, promote a pawn, and get a checkmate (if not an easier way).

Good game design, and good game.gold.png

Also thanks to HorusTheThird for being the keeper of the secret king locations.thumbup.png

Now we can start a bulldog game, and see if you can keep the crown. We'll discuss details for challenge (here).happy.png

gg, yeah the win is pretty trivial here. I assume you choose the g1 square for your king since I have checked at all squares except g1 and a4. a4 would not really make sense for you to pick since the king would be exposed there (although it could also be a brilliant choice if black ever plays Qa5 when white can respond with Kxa5). I was also intuitively guessing you picked g1 quite early since it seemed like the safest square.

These events was quite interesting and fun to play with. I'm quite satisfied with their current ruleset.
