Agreed.

Is the purpose to label squares for moves? Like "b2" is "11"?

It is certainly fine, but what is the advantage?

In infinite chess, we use numbers for both files and ranks. But that is because it is difficult to label files before "a" or after "z".

But I don't understand the advantage here. On the other hand, it works.happy.png

The progressive figures notation allows to use all set of small letters for a lettering pieces. This is very convenient for orientation and for typing.

Ivan, can you let us know the purpose of this rule, and how to apply it:

"Waterloo has no draws. Repeating any position with the same order of move is prohibited. Thirty ordinary moves without any capture and promotion means defeat".

First, how is the rule applied? In an example, let's say White makes a capture on move 50.
Then at move 80 (30 moves later with no capture or promotion), if white does not make a capture or promotion, does White lose? Or can White play, then leaving this burden to Black?

My (non-expert) opinion is that this rule is not ideal. It seems to add a random affect to the game: if a game has no progress it is not a draw. Instead one side gets the win from a position that humans cannot calculate, although the game ending was "draw-like". It could be giving wins and losses to players who deserved draws. Let me know what is your thinking.happy.png

Discussion on this issue is really necessary!

In the world of chess, passive play for the draw has always been condemned. In America, the chief ideologist of the uncompromising struggle was the respected Fischer (aut cum scuto, aut in scuto).
Waterloo  punishes a passive or unskillful player simply and clear. If you first did some of the aimless moves, then you lost.thumbdown.png

So in the situation outlined above, Black would be lost?
Avatar of IvanKosintsev

Yes! But earlier with 79th move of blacks of course if 50th move of blacks was without a capture.

Avatar of vickalan

Ok, I think I understand it. Is it correct to say that the losing move is on the ply following the 30th move with no capture or promotion? For example, using this designation:

X = capture
NP = no progress (no capture or no promotion)

Example with White making the last capture:

50 (X)...(NP)
51 (NP)...(NP) <etc>
79 (NP)...(NP)
80 (NP)...(Black must capture or promote, or Black loses)

Example with Black making the last capture:

50 ...(X)
51 (NP)...(NP) <etc>
80 (NP)...(NP)
81 (White must capture or promote, or White loses).

I'm just trying to make sure I understand the specific move number, and ply, where the game is decided.happy.png

I am ready to play when you are.
Avatar of IvanKosintsev

Don't hurry! Take it easy.

Remember! Each player (Whites or Blacks) has their own independent counter of moves.

Example for Whites:

50. (X) ...
51. (NP) ...  <etc>

...
79. (NP) ...
80. Whites must capture or promote, or Whites loses.

 Example for Blacks:

50. ... (X)
51. ... (NP) <etc>

...
79. ... (NP)
80. ... Blacks must capture or promote, or Blacks loses.

Attention!

The rules about a mate take priority.

Thanks Ivan. Now I understand it perfectly. The 30 moves of "no progress" pertains to each side independently.

@hitthepin, I think all the rules for the end game are now clear. We can start our "alternate end-game" (here) soon. I noticed you already played a move, so I'll make my move today or tomorrow.happy.png

I have always thought that chess players are the most intelligent and courageous people in the world. Now I understand that this was my big mistake and that they can not be more clever than the president of IHF.

Good news, friends!

Waterloo got an essential simplification through an using double-sided pieces. Now any teenager can play this chess without problem.

That is very interesting. I personally like Waterloo more with classical-looking chess pieces. It helps me understand how the pieces move. But your graphics are very cool too.happy.png

Salute vickalan!

  • Practice makes perfect! I do not insist on my futuristic graphics to the detriment of your individuality (egocentrism). I use the simplicity and accessibility of checkers, chips and coins. 30 vs 30. But the double-sided engraving can be individual. It is your right and your business! settings.png

Who does not know Waterloo?
Your blunder is disastrous to the culture of Europe. This game could by right become a cult for Europeans. But Americans are more perceptive to novelity and you can not to take away this from them.

C'est la vie!

Phooey!
It's natural. I know one good London Limerick.
Children play toys.
Girls play dolls.
Boys play war.
Champions play draws.
But heroes play Waterloo!
