That may be true. I don’t know. I am an educated man, but I can speak intelligently about the Chess habits of @theoof11.

What I meant to say was, if you were in theoof11’s shoes, would you like it if someone pointed out your faults the way you did to theoof11’s?

Again, you’re not wrong…just have some empathy. We don’t know what @theoof11 could be going through right now.

As a simple rule of life, if you are given a choice between being right and being kind, choose kind. At 87, you realize our lives on this Earth are too short to squander.

My first IM coach opened my eyes.  He was very honest and frank about my chess abilities.  IT was exactly what i needed to hear.  Did i always like what he had to tell me?  No, but it was what i needed to hear.  Part of how i weed out chess students that i know are going to be a waste of time, is to test them to see how sensitive they are.  Some are sensitive for varying reasons, which is understandable.   Some are sensitive simply because they have been told all their life about how special they are.  How wonderful they are.  And what a winner they are!

So when the real world comes knocking they dont know how to deal with it.

Congratulations on living 87 years.  I am 58.  I just do not have the time, patience, or energy for the easily offended.

As far as being in theoof11's shoes?  What did Einstein say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?  He ask posted about how to improve, and has not followed any of t he advice.

I totally understand. I never tried to baby the young people in my life as they grew older. I agree that they need to be ready for the real world.

Good luck on the rest of your life. I hope our paths cross again someday.

I would look forward to that.

Hey! I remember being a teenager. I checked your ratings and they are almost all below 1200. You’re still young, so if you put in a good bit of work in the next few years, I think you’ll get a lot better. I just can’t invest in you right now.

My suggestion is that you focus on your schoolwork these next couple of years. Right now, that it what will lead you to a better future, not Chess.

Here is your free lesson:

General Ideas.

  1. Stop playing blitz, and bullet.  Play longer time controls of at least G45, or longer.
  2. Follow Opening Principles:
  • Control the center.
  • Develop minor pieces toward the center.
  • Castle.
  • Connect your rooks.
  1. Study tactics...tactics...tactics.  One of my favorite quotes is this: "Until you reach Master, your first name is tactics, your middle name is tactics, and your last name is tactics”.
  2. Double Check your moves.  Before making a move, ask yourself: "Are my pieces safe?"
  3. After your opponent moves, ask yourself: "What is my opponent trying to do?"
  4. Analyze your games WITHOUT a chess engine, then have someone stronger go over the games, or post them online for review.
  5. DO NOT memorize openings. Learn and understand the pawn structure, and piece placement for the opening you wish to learn.
  6. Learn Basics Mates:
  • K vs. KQ
  • K vs. KR
  • K vs. KRR
  1. Learn Basic King and Pawn endings.
  • KP vs. K
  • Opposition
  1. Have Fun!

Opening Principles:

  1. Control the center squares – d4-e4-d5-e5
  2. Develop your minor pieces toward the center – piece activity is the key
  3. Castle
  4. Connect your rooks

Tactics...tactics...tactics...

The objective of development is about improving the value of your pieces by increasing the importance of their roles. Well-developed pieces have more fire-power than undeveloped pieces and they do more in helping you gain control.

Now we will look at 5 practical things you can do to help you achieve your development objective.

They are:

  1. Give priority to your least active pieces.
  • Which piece needs to be developed (which piece is the least active)
  • Where should it go (where can its role be maximized)
  1. Exchange your least active pieces for your opponent’s active pieces.
  2. Restrict the development of your opponent’s pieces.
  3. Neutralize your opponent’s best piece.
  4. Secure strong squares for your pieces.

Don’t help your opponent develop.

There are 2 common mistakes whereby you will simply be helping your opponent to develop:

  1. Making a weak threat that can easily be blocked
  2. Making an exchange that helps your opponent to develop a piece

Pre Move Checklist:

  1. Make sure all your pieces are safe.
  2. Look for forcing moves: Checks, captures, threats. You want to look at ALL forcing moves (even the bad ones) as this will force you look at, and see the entire board.
  3. If there are no forcing moves, you then want to remove any of your opponent’s pieces from your side of the board.
  4. If your opponent doesn’t have any of his pieces on your side of the board, then you want to improve the position of your least active piece.
  5. After each move by your opponent, ask yourself: "What is my opponent trying to do?"

Dont thank me for something you wont use.  But now i get to track this.  You have played ZERO daily games, and my guess is that it will stay at ZERO.   I am actually going to follow this.

You know how many times i have been asked by some here to help them?  Over 100.

You know how many times they listen?  None.

"I promise to stop playing speed chess"  They dont.

"I promise to do my own analysis." They dont.

"I promise to ask questions." They dont.

"I promise to explain why i made a move." They dont.

"I promise to play slower." They dont.

Or if u don't then go to Lichess.org

Lmao, this comment will likely be deleted by moderation and account muted. Everyone knows about Li*****; we analyze our games and practice tactics there, after all. There's also CT which has a better tactics trainer (harder puzzles).

Lol, if you guys want to be beggars, at least beg for CT membership. It is loads better for improving.

He has ONE, but it will end soon and there will be none

@IMBacon: you helped the wrong kind. The ones who really want to improve won't ask for suggestions in the forums here where most posts are by idiotic kids begging for memberships while having <700 rating, almost no puzzles solved. I recall a member who had a gold membership gifted to them by someone and their profile had 0 games! ZERO! No solved puzzles either. Most of those people want membership just for show-off.
