Batgirl, let me weigh in on your question C to Al.

Thanks Ivandh.  Your reponses always carry a lot of weight. While Thomas Jefferson said that the best government was the least government, he also felt that all governments should have a revolution every 20 years to keep them honest.  Since this isn't a government and the likelihood of a revolution is scant,

@ivandh - very thoughtful, well-written post.

@batgirl - oh darn

Can't see how that would that work for e.g. friends of trolls will work together to boost each other  points up.

My thought was not give this privilege to everyone. Only to a responsible few.

How do you know that they are responsible

       By looking at their post, professional administrators with degrees in psychology, can tell a lot about a person, by what he/she, says.  Watch Criminal Minds.

Live reality

That is not going to happen

Allow members to rate posts, but give this privilege to only a few members in the beginning, the ones whose judgement can be absolutely relied on. The mods can do this. Once a member has made a certain number of positive votes, he get the privilege to vote other posts. This way hopefully, the newer members will be motivated to contribute something positive.

Once the positively voted members reaches a fairly large number. A new section can be created where only the positively voted members can post, and no one else. Hopefully, this will attract, GMs to post, since the significant quality, will be higher, and the GMs will know they will not be attacked or will have to deal with any trolls.

This "option" is occasionally brought up by some members. It would never work here. Dialogue works much better than a click on a mouse. For instance, would it be better if I simply gave a "thumbs down" click to your post?

Also (as has been written previously), friends would simply click to get the privelege you write of-when writing why it is you agree or disagree is better.

The only reliability in judgement is a persons history and their last post.

I guess then we just have to wait for the next reincarnation of palm-beetle ;)

You mean the mods?

Should peopele who create a forum be able to dictate who can or can't post (as it stands now)?

On some other sites possibly offending comments are hidden, you can still see each of these comments by clicking a "Show" button. I think this is much better than a complete ban by users.

And if staff and moderators would get tools to quickly view these "user moderated" comments, this could help them a lot to identify and moderate really offensive comments.

Yeah, but that plan still derives from a popularity opinion upvote/downvote system to push certain comments to hidden like with youtube (which is not a very good source of comments in itself and shows how flawed the system is).
