Mouse slips - chess.com bug?

Sort:
mvh999

I use my mouse on probably 20-30 different UIs on a daily basis and never have a problem, yet lately, and only when on chess.com, my mouse acts up and my pieces frequently do not land on the intended square, but rather on an undesirable square enroute to their intended destination.

Two months ago, this used to happen maybe once every 5-10 games, now it seems to be happening every game, and sometimes multiple times per game.  Any recent changes to the chess.com UI? Does chess.com keep a record of software changes that is browsable by chess.com users?

No, I'm positive the problem has nothing to do with my new meth habit or the palsy that seems to have taken over my body! :-)

Thanks, mvh999

Have you tried playing on a different computer to see if it happens?

If so,  have you used the Bug Report tool in Help to let the developers know?

There is no publicly available list of updates that I have seen. What would you do with such a list?

mvh999

If I was experiencing what might be considered a potential software glitch, I would probably check the list to see if a round of changes had been applied recently, and if so,  would conclude that the problem was likely due to the updates.  This might be a good time to open a bug report, as you suggested, and discontinue regular use until I noticed some acknowledgement/suggestion/etc.

Yes very nasty indeed!  And definitely the kind of bug that can adversely effect one's mousing!  Thanks for sharing.  I will keep my sleeves rolled down from now on.

The mouse letting go of the pieces randomly has been in this crap site for over six years now.   It's been reported dozens of times. They will never ever fix it.   You just randomly lose.  Best advice is to click to and from squares, but even that glitches out sometimes and makes random moves.  (yep it's 2021, still doing it)

Magnus_Chase19

yeah the collision boxes for the squares are a bit off

Have the same problem. recently increased to a level that I just cannot bear anymore...

Hi Have exactly the same problem.Bought a new mouse but nothing has helped.

ChessLOLwhat

Exactley the same problem. My mouse is new, but these nasty mouseslips costed me probably 200-300 rating points easily. It's just insane how strangely pieces behave when you touch them wuith your cursor, the're just randomly decide to put themselves on squares while you move them.

chess.com should definitely update their analysis and add this icon:

mouse slip icon

Use light ui to see it bruh XD

Vyvorante

how about they change their UI and add a switch to change from slow response and fast response whenever you want even during games XD

Alexandre_Blunder

and I was thinking that just happened to me

LarjGun

has started happening to me a lot also - thought it was my mouse but can't be that as i use the same mouse for loads of things

I have noticed that when I move a piece on the phone, it sometimes places it a square above where I want to go, and will not fix unless I close the page and reopen it.

This is especially noticeable when playing Chess bullet in quick mode (1 minute or less). This situation has been so frustrating lately that I've lost at least 10/20 games due to this type of bug.

The piece is dropped in an undesire square most of the time. I´ve tried in different computers with different OS and different kind of updated browsers but it happens frequently, so I suspect this is an unsolved bug so far.

I think I will stop playing bullet since latency and this type of bugs affect my game.

I think that some sort of configuration setting could help with mouseslips. The thinking here is that one major way mouseslips happen is when our aim is off and we accidentally release the mouse when the mouse pointer isn't quite in the square we're aiming for.

What would help is a setting that adjusts which part of the square you must release the pointer into to register a move. Right now it seems that practically any part of the square is fine, including very close to the edge. If we had a setting that excluded the very edge, that would be awesome. Probably three options would be best: entire square (what we have now, would be the default), exclude near edge (safer, but requires a bit more precision), middle only (safest but requires the most precision).

Obviously there is a speed vs safety tradeoff here. People who want maximum speed would use the default setting. People who are prepared to sacrifice a little speed for fewer mouseslips would go for one of the other settings.

We already have settings for other aspects of making a move, such as animation speed, and click-click vs drag. Given that making moves is such a crucial aspect of the user experience, I think it's reasonable to have another setting for customising it.

I use a smartphone but from what I remember I did have an unusually high amount of trouble clicking both squares vs dragging the pieces to their destinations. I don't remember having too many problems with the cursor before I got the phone. But it's the reverse, safer to click the 2 squares than clicking and dragging, opposite of the touchscreen where you want to drag then.

That sounds terrible for me🥲... so I often play chess on 📱 although the screen might be small a lot, it can prevents you from mouse slipping ,right?
