An important thing to consider

Will the site EVER run out of usernames? It seems like a weird conspiracy but it could happen. As millions open accounts and thousands get closed or closed themselves, the amount of unoriginal usernames skyrocket and soon, we will be left with W392D38sk3 usernames. Plus, some bots could make a bunch of accounts, close them, and continue. If this happens, we will be left with no usernames so if a future GM comes, then will probably not be able to even get through the username system. So, chess.com, take this as a warning before it's too late. As more people want to do chess (thanks to the queens gambit and PogChamps) more usernames will be sucked into the void, and thus, making username supply very short. So, I recommend chess.com make a different system (e.g. FMLarry#69420) to help with the rising amount of people willing to play chess.

Usernames have a minimum of 3 characters and a maximum of 20 characters. There are 26 letters and 10 numbers to choose from, which gives us a total of 36 characters. The number of possible combinations for usernames is 36^3 + 36^4 + 36^5 + ... + 36^20. That number sums to 13,749,422,954,239,269,326,919,955,860,288.

In other words, we probably won't run out of usernames.

FMLarry

OMG THATS A CRAP TON OF USERNAMES!

but again, chesscom usernames must have at least one letter, and must not have certain words in it.

xrm4

Well, that will decrease the number of potential usernames by a bit, but the number will still be large enough to support everybody.

no it will never run out and if it did, it probably would be 2 thousand years before it happens since we have so much time left

The thing is, some good usernames with real words will be taken first, and robot names (e.g. WDS69420) are just trash

Chess.com will likely purge abandoned accounts if that becomes an issue.

e.g. - If a user hasn't logged into their account in 5 years, then the account is deleted.

That's the easiest way to deal with this issue.

mhm... just that names like "Hikaru" are wanted to be used a lot

That's the easiest way, but chess.com doesn't like that. Most of the accounts here are deleted or closed but chess.com needs to show a number that they have many people here. if they start deleting accounts the number would go down drastically, which would not be a good marketing strategy and suppose someone decides to login after 5 years only to find the account deleted, they would just move to another site, which again is not a good marketing strategy

Great idea, let's run out of original ideas.

Yes, that would be the end of the world as we know it.

You're assuming that someone would not use this site if they found their account had been deleted after 5 years of inactivity. I think it's more likely that they would just create a new account.

yeah maybe

I thought it'd be funny to have SmellMyFinger as a username but nope... it was already taken. Go figure.
