Wonder how long the entire 3rd game lasted?

Kasparov is in India. Expect lot of politics and off board stategies by both side. I like Anand on any day

I don't think postgame press conferences were in vogue back then, but I doubt Botvinnik or Karpov would have been very chatty after a tough game in a world championship match. I understand the media aspect of the match, but postgame interviews feel a little like interviewing a baseball manager in the fourth inning of a World Series game or a basketball player at halftime- for me it diminishes the perceived intensity of the struggle. Not to mention that when these guys lose they are hardly in the mood to give great answers... maybe interviews on the rest days are a future possibility.

Precisely. After playing a gruelling game, you are hardly in the mood of pleasing the crowd asking mundane questions. The only time a player will be happy to face press will be if he wins the game. And a lengthy, friendly chat should be expected if the player wins the championship itself because then you are in a real jovial mood, irrespective of how gruelling the grind had been.

Anyone else not liking Carlsen's attitude at the conference? The way he sits in his chair and the way he answers the questions, looks like if he doesn't want to be there. Makes a bit disrespectful impression if you ask me (even though some of the questions aren't the best).

I was suprised why he didnt took the draw offer.

I'm listening to and watching the replay of the broadcast, since I awoke just an hour ago. It's about 45 minutes into the broadcast and they're on move ten.

Joseph_Truelson

Whos winning?

I think Anand is showing this new-kid-on-the-block the weight of a world champion. It's a title not to be taken lightly, and Anand has set a very high standard for his successor, whoever that may be. Carlsen seems upset that the match didn't go the way he wanted. It's a schooling by a World Champion. Kinda reminds me of the Karpov - Kasparov match. I hope it doesn't get that long.

28.e3!! was a brilliant move (and I don't care what the engines say).

How so pfren? Interested to know.

Carlsen's winning. Anand may resign any minute now.

Anand is certainly proving some of his harshest critics wrong. The ratings gap means nothing, and he won't be steamrolled. On the other hand, Carlsen will pick himself up after saving this game and will go on fighting.

Hopefully, after this game this means the match will continue to be interesting.

Was there a win for black that Anand was unable to find because of the time pressure? Is there an expert consensus? It certainly looked promising for Black after the e-file opened and even Carlsen said "it looked scary".

Magnus might be well advised to ditch that pissweak opening if he seriously wants to win this match.

Yeah, I agree. I wonder if he knows that cool b4 line  :)

madhacker

You would hope that he has prepared more than one white opening for a WC match. Nothing objectively wrong with the Reti though.

So- you did not understand it, right? No problem- initially, I did not, either... and I would never play it in a normal game. This kind of moves is the way super-GM's discriminate from the mass.

Even if the move is losing, after Black accepting the gift on b2, it does deserve the double exclamation mark... it drops material in a "dry" position to create fantastic complications (and the World Champion declined the gift).

Feel free to sit behind your engine and say the move was "bad"... but in practical play, the move was just fantastic- creating a potential mess out of nothing.

Not at all; I see what you are saying now.  I thought it was worth asking you and so it was.  It's part of why chess between humans is so much more interesting than chess between computers; there is the psychological element.  I think the match is building nicely with today's clash. For whatever reason, I'm thinking Carlsen might do well with black tomorrow.

And advices for bets tomorrow? Is it wise to bet 100€ on draw? :)

akafett

I need an update. I can't get the info from FIDE site. Is it a win or draw? Can someone post current lines?

FirebrandX, do you mean he should have played 13  Qc1?

I know the engine liked that, but all commentators (on chessbomb) said it would only force Kh7, which is a move Anand would have liked to make anyway. The stronger kibbitzers seemed to agree with that.

He means it created tactical complexities that Anand wasn't comfortable in analysing so he just took a simpler route - ending up in a dead draw.

Whether the move is sound under engine analysis is irrelevant as Anand didn't have an engine - he didn't feel comfortbale trying to anaylse it over the board and that was enough to make it a very good move in practical terms.

The oddest move in the match for me though was 13. Bb4 by Carslen. He was clearly thinking about Bb4 and Qc1 which he played next anyway (let's assume Carlsen can see 1.5 ply ahead!), but had he reversed move order he would have gained a tempo (as after Qc1 the Q and  bishop on d2 are now lined up on Anand's h6 pawn, forcing Anand to waste a move with Kh7. Instead Anand played 13. Be6 and he gained the tempo and dropped his bishop into d5. Just very odd.

In both cases Carlsen's Q is on c1 and his black squared bishop on c4.

The issue is which position is better.

Anand's K on h7 and his white bishop on any of d7/e6/f5 or g4

Anand's king on g8 and his bishop on d5?
