We are Chess.com are a little confused, and we need your help! As you can see on our member map, there are a bunch of countries that are RELATED, but not necessairily the same. To be totally honest we don't even know exactly what the relationships are (and maybe that is a matter of opinion?), but we would like to know how you want to be classified.

Should we list United Kingdom and Great Britain and England? What about Northern Ireland? Did we get the Isle of Man right? You get the picture. Basically, we're confused as to how to list these countries correctly :)

Help? :)

yeah its only two. Ireland and Great Britan, you could merge both and have U.K. At least I think that is how it works : )

Only Northern Ireland is in the United Kingdom , Isle of man belongs to england , scotland , england , wales and northern ireland make up the UK . Republic of ireland is a seperate state from britain...

Great Britain and United Kingdoms are the same, the real name is United Kingdoms of Great Britain. So Great Britain and United Kingdoms are only two diminutives.
erik

yes, i know Ireland is separate, but do we need to list all of these countries?

should we get rid of Northern Ireland as a country? should we get rid of England and Great britain and only have the United Kingdom? what do people want? :)

Etienne
I think you should only put UK.

as long as republic of ireland is not in uk !!

I don't think it matters too much but do not include Republic of Ireland in the UK or Great Britain, it is not part of it! If you are going to split the UK/GB into countries then make sure you have England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

England has existed as a unified entity since the 10th century; the union between England and Wales, begun in 1284 with the Statute of Rhuddlan, was not formalized until 1536 with an Act of Union; in another Act of Union in 1707, England and Scotland agreed to permanently join as Great Britain; the legislative union of Great Britain and Ireland was implemented in 1801, with the adoption of the name the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; the Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921 formalized a partition of Ireland; six northern Irish counties remained part of the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland and the current name of the country, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was adopted in 1927. hope this helps.

By that argument, everyone in Canada should be classified as part of the USA

You're totally right, except Quebec Cool

Its really just personal preference. Firstly, the UK and Great Britain is basically the same thing and consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The republic of Ireland is a seperate state and is also known as Eire. When i play on redhotpawn.com i have a choice of flag to use on my profile. Either the Union Jack which represents Great Britain or the George cross which represents St George, the patron saint of England. I chose the George cross. I did this basically to narrow down my location abit more for other members. The other member states have their own flags too. And no, you shouldn't get rid of Northern Ireland as a country, but i'll leave my opinion on that there, because of the political unrest it causes, as you probably know. I am quite happy to play under the Union jack by the way. Oh, and if anyone thinks any of this is wrong, please say so, my history stinks!
ollymc

it took me til i was about 15 to get my head around having a British passport while living in England as a UK citizen so i feel your pain. you have 2 choices;

1) list 2 countries - UK and Republic of Ireland.

2) list 5 countries - England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.

personally i think either is acceptable - if this was internet football (soccer) then i would vehemently rage against being bandied up with the scots or the welsh but chess is more of a philosophical pursuit and so i would be honoured to share board space with my British compatriots Wink

Totally correct ollymc! I too have spotted the mistake. On the member profiles Erik, you've included England, Scotland, Wales and NI as individual countries. Nothing wrong with that, but if you choose one of them you get the Union jack flag, not the flag of the country that it's representing. So the easy solution in my opinion for you is to scrub these four countries off the list, and only leave United Kingdom. But don't forget the Union jack DOES NOT represent the Republic of Ireland. Thats why U2 don't win anything at the Brits, they're from Dublin, Eire ( republic of Ireland ) and arn't allowed to be entered. Which is a poor argument because Israel enter the Eurovision song contest. And Israel isn't in Europe.

ok. i think we're going to leave the option of having all of the different countries or UK, up to you. but then we want to get the right flags. can someone link me to the right flags for them?

UK and Ireland, definitely will be suffcient. If you start breaking down the UK, you must be ready to supply flags for the welsh, the english, the saxons, what's left of the juts, every scottish clan, and whoever i have missed mentioning because the ethnicity is quite extensive. Politically, I think UK and Ireland will cover that area, for now.
erik

ok. which one do i use for Northern Ireland? :)

Interestingly enough, for those in other member countries, in terms of chess, rugby, and football (soccer!), the four countries which make up Great Britain have seperate governing bodies and take great delight in beating each other up over a chess board. This has very recently been underlined by the abandonment of the Brittish Chess Federation (BCF) and the formation of the English Chess Federation (ECF), whilst Scotland have Chess Scotland (CS). There is also an Irish federation, but I am unclear about Wales. We are all, very separate. Each Federation has its own grading system, and all are affiliated to FIDE. A couple of years ago when I played at Hastings, the Scottish flag was placed beside my name, etc. Hope this helps to untangle things.

Not at all, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland are countries in themselves. You could compare a bit like states, but they are still much more than that. England is the only one directly ruled by the UK government.

But maybe some Welsh/English/Scottish/Northern Irish/Briton or whatever you want to call yourself clarify further or correct any mistakes however?

erik
ok. flags have been updated. members can choose to just be UK, or GB, or any of the sub-countries as they please :)
