Chess.com's view is that if someone wants to play under a certain flag they will let them, and they are not interested in the politics of it.
When you sign up in chess.com, they present you a menu list called "country", not "flag". And they list "Canary Islands", which are 7 spanish islands since XV century and have never been an independent country, and "Catalonia", which is a region composed of 4 spanish provinces and never has been an independent country. Also, they list "Gibraltar", which is a British colony since 1714 and never has been and independent country. If chess.com wants to offer a list of "flags", can I choose anyone I like?. The village where my grandfather was born must have less than 100 residents, but was founded in XI century and surely it has a very old flag. Can I choose it? It is a country as independent as Catalonia, Canary Islands or Gibraltar, and much older than some of these!
There are people from the hill country, in the Appalacian Mountain region, of the southern United States. They fly the "Rebel" flag. It is a flag of a country that wasn't recognized by the United States, but there certainly is a people and a territory to whom that flag is akin, so the idea of country, nation, territory, and people are subjective. It functioned as an independent nation of states for a time, though short lived.
It actually can become racial or prejudical against people who belong to any of those, though they aren't recognized by others. If you don't believe me, ask anyone who lives in a country who fought for it's independence. Ask anyone from Israel. Ask anyone from the Aryan nation. Certainly, both ask and deny that last group at your own peril. Maybe that is what it would take to get my point across, or maybe someone deciding that you don't belong to a legitimate country, regardless of what it's citizens or neighbors say, is what it will take. It is different for all of us to realize what we are really a part of, as well as, everyone else. In the end, it is our opinion that really matters, not everyone else's ...
Surely, we forgot the Indian Nation, and the Confederation... There are lots of flags: cherokee, sioux, apache, cheyenne, comanche,... I personally prefer the Sioux. And what about the 7th Cavalry flag? They were quite a lot of people, may be more than Malvinas residents..
As you admit, Catalonia has never been an independent country. And the last part of your text is also the most ridiculous: Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808, and it costed France some 250.000 men. Napoleon also invaded Rome, Viena, Moscow,.... Surely Wladimir Putin will be glad to know that he is French! Ha, ha, ha.
--- Tercio3: I realize that English is not your first language however the fact remains that Catalonia was independent from 788 AD to 1137 and was ruled by the Counts of Franconia for 349 years ( INDEPENDENT of SPAIN ). Are you able to understand that ? As for the Falkland Island they have never had any connection to Argentina. If you are going to comment on History perhaps you should try reading a bit of it first.
Cabadenwurt: I'm impressed that you knew that about Catalonia. You did previously know that, right?
Or did you just skim a "wikipedia" article just now in order to post that?
Thanks Casamagna. History has been a interest of mine for many years, however I had to check an Encyclopedia for the exact dates ( yes a few of us Oldtimers still have some books ).

I realize Spanish is for sure not your first language, so you know very little about Spanish history, as you show. La Marca Hispánica was stablished by Charlemagne and its area corresponds to the region beetwen Pamplona, the Pyrenees and the Ebro River. At that time, Spain was invaded by Islam, and only after eight hundreds years we got to recover the whole Iberian Peninsule. Catalonia was never and independent country. It was never a kingdom, and when the Reconquista advanced, it was reincorporated to Spain, concretely to the Kingdom of Aragón. Perhaps you shouldn't try to give lessons on something, just to show how ignorant you are.
i don't think ireland is a country any more either. just a banana republic now. if italy is the boot of europe, then ireland is just a sock. i'm keeping my international flag.
Tercio3 are you then saying that you can't have an English, Welsh or Scottish flag? None of those countries issue their own passports, you don't have separate UN members for each one and yet they are indisputably countries. I don't know which region of Spain your from but you must know that Spain has always been a very culturally diverse nation, with each region having very separate identities, it is perfectly acceptable to call yourself Basque or Catalan, denial of the right to call yourself that is Fascism.
And Catalonia has been a country, you've been given examples from history which are indisputable
Which examples? There is not a single one! I do not speak about what I don't know. I say nothing about Wales or Scottland. Everyone can call himself what he likes, but don't call a country what is just, and always has been, a region. Trying to divide my country, something which nationalist and socialists have been trying for decades, is nationalism+socialism. Do you remember? Nationalism+socialism=nationalsocialism.
Linuxblue1: I am also a linux user: xubuntu and pclinuxOS. Hello every body out there!...
