Catalonia is not a country nor a nation

if someone is happy to fly the Catalonia flag, that's their choice. they don't have the skull and crossbones here so i'm stuck with the globe, though i've applied fot Catalonian citizenship.

I don't mind what you buy or don't buy, Whaleeyeman. And of course, Whaleeyeman: if a territory is or not a country is a question of politics and History, not a question for a programmer to decide whatever he likes most.

Anyway, I was not the first to inject anything: I did not make the wrong "countries" list of chess.com! And as I said before, anyone can make a mistake, such as this wrong list, but if one keeps himself in the wrong, that is not simply a mistake, but something worse: foolishness.

CalamityChristie

go tell the person, then.

brilliant!!

Spain discovered all these places!

the inhabitants jumped for joy when they were finally discovered.

"we're saved!!! we're saved!!!"

LOL

Come on, this sarcasm is not justified! But as a matter of fact, this is probably what the indigenous populations believed....these tribes of the Americas were not as wonderful as probably you are led to believe!

Probably most people is a partisan of Rousseaus view about the good savage theory, I explain, that man does not need any instruction because, basically, out of necessity he is going to find a way to fix his needs. also that education destroys mans liberty, that living in society perverts him...etc. But these people lived in constant wars among themselves, ruled by ruthless leaders, with no sense of ethics or moral behaviour, living like savages...but with Spanish colonization these things were changed and anyone can see how these peoples flourished into a society of free peoples. ok, the present is different and they sought independence in the 19 th century but until then, these people were more than satisfied to live under the Spanish Crown, but that is a completely different story.

History of Spain is one of true great people, a land of conquerors, missionaries, powerful religious orders that kept the world rolling in different aspects, from here some of the greatest treasures of literature have arise...known and praised by all (Quijote, Don Juan, La Celestina..), of great intellectuals. The list is endless, so I m thinking all these hatred for Spain has only one explanation, envy of its past glory!

CalamityChristie

oh i see, you're from Spain, small bit of bias there.

my humble apologies, senor. you are indeed a super race.

axelfolley

The best thing about our people is that we do not believe to be a super race or better than any other person. Every one has the capacity to succeed and become better, that is the idea behind what I have been trying to say...Spanish conquerors were not super race, they believed that the new peoples could proper too! and I think was different compared to what other conquered colonies from other europeans had to withstand... that is all.

CalamityChristie

you said "conquerers", not explorers or discoverers, right ?

didn't the original Axel Foley used to have a sense of humour ?

also Australia was discovered by Dutch explorers

Sorry, you are wrong. According to the Australian Government (http://australia.gov.au/about-australia/australian-story/european-discovery-and-colonisation): "The first records of European mariners sailing into 'Australian' waters occurs around 1606, and includes their observations of the land known as Terra Australis Incognita (unknown southern land)."

These European ships were three Spanish ships, whose commander were Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, a Portuguese born navigator. The three ships left Callao in Spanish Peru, on 21 December 1605, with Torres in command of the "San Pedro." In May 1606 they reached the islands which Queirós named La Austrialia del Espiritu Santo; Austrialia being a compliment to the House of Austria, to which the king of Spain belonged.

Luís Vaez de Torres,Galician or Portuguese, (born c. 1565; fl. 1607) was a 16th-17th century maritime explorer serving the Spanish Crown, noted for the first recorded navigation of the strait which separates the continent of Australia from the island of New Guinea, and which now bears his name (Torres Strait).

This is funny because on that same webpage, immediately after you stop quoting them, they continue:

"The first records of European mariners sailing into 'Australian' waters occurs around 1606, and includes their observations of the land known as Terra Australis Incognita (unknown southern land). The first ship and crew to chart the Australian coast and meet with Aboriginal people was the Duyfken captained by Dutchman, Willem Janszoon."

Not that I imagine you care about the truth, I just thought it was hilarious, that's all.

Apparently it's back to Spain now Lisa. You get to be part of the super race again!

Aelormungandr

Hey guys, totally random question: what ever happened to all those Incas? Don't know why that popped into my head, but hey- totally innocent.

ivandh

I have to say though, it is interesting that a huge debate about something irrelevant turned into a huge debate that is irrelevant to the original irrelevant debate, as opposed to say, pictures of waffles.

Stevie65

Nice one Balanchandar..I noticed that one got locked.   Very heated!

Hey Ivan i noticed you were privvy to it also..was it fun?

I think the OP is upset at the possibility that the catalan president has promised to hold a referendom on Catalonia's independance...and it's a real possibility that it will get it..So don't hassle chess.com just yet.

That flag they fly may be recognised by the EU soon.

Bubkus

Belgium is not a country either yet no one complains ,so just relax.

madhacker

We get a thread like this every now and then. "Xyz-land is not a 'proper' country. It should not be included in the flag list. Remove it now, this is an outrage!" I tend to think that if this concept of 'proper country' was carried through to its logical conclusion to reflect what actually goes on in real life, you would only have a choice of a handful of flags, e.g.

The stars and stripes, which as well as the US, would also cover places such as the UK, Israel, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq

The European Union flag, which would cover all european countries whose inhabitants would be flogged for daring to request their own flags

The Shell logo, which would cover several central African countries, several middle eastern countries, and Scotland

The Apple logo for China, India and other far-eastern countries

(DISCLAIMER: This is meant to be a JOKE... the targets of this joke are governments and large corporations, not the ordinary inhabitants of any country!)

First Catalonia, then Scotland, who's next?  Texas is (sometimes) inclined too.

DrFrank124c

Some southerners to this day talk about secession. So maybe chess.com should offer a Confederate flag. There was once a plan for New York City to also leave the union if the southern secession was successful so maybe they should also offer a New York City flag.

zborg

Most of "New England" considered secession, in the early Republic.

They didn't like President Jefferson.  Not at all.

Stevie65

Which was the first state to initiate secession? And who?

ivandh

South Carolina was hooting about secession since the 1830's.

I guess the difference between Catalonian flag and the flag typically called the Confederate flag or the Nazi flag is that the latter tend to be associated with pro-slavery and racist movements of the highest egregiosity. I'm not really sure what the Catalonians did but I don't think it is quite that nefarious.
