[Removed - MOD] old account was banned for cheating, so that's not true.

[Removed - MOD] should have known better and have been a billionaire, then chess.com would happily let him use an engine

But there is some truth to it.

Let's some some Twitch or YouTube celebrity was helping Erik make a lot of money via their chess.com account... and then it was discovered this person cheated.

Would they be banned? Of course not... that's not how the world works. They'd be given a few chances behind closed doors.

When did [Removed - MOD] cheat?

In 2017. Chess.com and others have done a good job keeping it under the rug. You can find some old Wesely So tweets about it, and some games on Youtube where [Removed - MOD] was playing Naka under the now banned name (chess.com even changed the name to make it harder to find, but you can tell it's the same account because the games match).

By the way I don't think much of it. He was just a kid, and kids do dumb things all the time.

But people will judge him too harshly for it, for various reasons, so ultimately I think trying to keep a secret is the right approach... I'm just mentioning it here because I'm in a bad mood tongue.png

Dang I never knew that he cheated at one point.

If they got banned for using engines in unrated games, then why were they banned in the first place? Seems the decision to ban was a knee jerk reaction from chess.com. What we have to understand is that these were unrated games, therefor allowed. What I don't understand is why were they banned at all?

You are not allowed to use an engine, even in an unrated game, without your opponent's knowledge and consent.

Their rules state the following:

  • Using an engine in a rated game will get your account closed, even if the other player knows you’re doing it! This confusion happens more often than you might think. One scenario we have encountered is two friends who were trying to see which engine was stronger by playing engine moves in a game against each other. If you want to do something like this, the game MUST be unrated, or you will get closed!

They do not state anything about your opponents consent in unrated games.

It's right there in the section you quoted.

This:

"... even if the other player knows you're doing it."

plus this:

"If you want to do something like this..."

... means that in unrated games, the opponent must consent to your use of an engine.

Also, point #4 of the Fair Play Policy clearly states:

  • Do not use chess engines, software of any kind, bots, plugins or any tools that analyze positions during play

It's better to be safe than sorry, but hey, if you want to try it in an unrated game, be my guest.

Have you READ the passage that you quoted?

The "something like this" mentioned in that section is clearly "One scenario we have encountered is two friends who were trying to see which engine was stronger by playing engine moves in a game against each other. "

That presupposes consent.

Avatar of letsmateout

The scenario is between 2 friends playing a rated game. Doesn't apply to the context.

What I infer from this statement: Using an engine in a rated game will get your account closed, even if the other player knows you’re doing it!

is that it ONLY applies to rated games.

Avatar of blueemu

Show me where it says "except in unrated games".

I can find these 2 different pages where they state their fair play policy:

https://support.chess.com/article/648-what-do-i-need-to-know-about-fair-play-on-chess-com

https://www.chess.com/legal/fair-play

The two pages are clearly out of sync in some edge cases.

Found a third page:

https://support.chess.com/article/317-what-counts-as-cheating-on-chess-com

They last part about letting them know seems more a like a courtesy rather than a rule per se. Anyway all of this leads to massive confusion.

Cheating isn't allowed to be discussed in main forums, please join the cheating forum.
