Chess.com Price Increases - Disgusting

I have a membership because I like the site and I wanted to support it.

It costs me about 27 cents per day.

Don’t renew if you don’t like the price increases. They’re hoping to get lots of cash now by dangling the price increase.

Chess popularity should be coming down after its pandemic/QG peak.

This site is also competing against all of the streaming services that are raising prices. I expect a lot of subscriptions to get canceled as inflation eats into peoples food budgets.

I run my own business, I could charge nothing for my services and rely on goodwill to pay my bills… no thanks. I could charge just enough to cover my expenses, I would then need to work till the day I die… no thanks. I charge what the market will bear, I provide an excellent service, I make a profit, my customers are happy, I’m happy.
As long as chess.com keep me happy I’m willing to pay.
To sum up, you don’t like the product? Try something else

Those with current membership that continue don't have price increases.

I think a few people aren't looking at the big picture.    I just heard 3 news stories that has to do with finance. Airports are cancelling flights because of a shortage of personnel....... 300,000 teachers are leaving the profession every month. The 3rd thing is about a lot of members who subscribe to streaming platforms....are cutting back. The 1st two has to do with people leaving the workforce.....then you have Apple, Hulu, Disney + losing customers. So IDK where the OP gets this notion that everything is fine, and people at Chess.com are all millionaires.

Might need a fact check on this one. There aren’t 300k teachers leaving the profession every month, i don’t think that’s possible. My guesstimate says there isn’t more than 4-5M in public and private schools combined.

It’s okay , most don’t understand the difference. “Fascist” is just one of the latest buzz words.

So, 3.7M K-12 teachers in 2019-20. (Public and private) They’d be gone in one year. Something isn’t right with the numbers quoted. Now, I’m not fighting the messenger (RJC) just disputing the reported numbers.

I don't mean to change direction of THIS thread........  its just that there are a lot of economies that are NEVER going to go back to what they were.

Well we could just shut down the world economies, conjure up trillions of dollars out of thin air and pay people to not work. What could possibly go wrong.

If chess.com wants to take advantage of the fact the world is full of imbeciles, I for one can't blame 'em.

People cannot afford to pay rent.

People cannot afford groceries.

People cannot afford utilities.

People cannot afford prescriptions.

Streaming services keep getting more expensive.

But OH NO....chess.com is raising rates for the first time in 13 year.  And if you renew or signup before Sept. 1 you get the current rate.

SHEEESH...peoples priorities.

Avatar of Problem5826

There's no need for a membership to the website. If anything, it seems like trying to monetize something that isn't even their own intellectual property.

You had yahoo chess well before. We would play yahoo pool on the school computers.

it's not about priorities.  it's about the scale of disgust.  at least, for the op.  not really sure what that means though ...

we need to call in the expert

Some people will not like who predicted that. Almost exactly two years ago this was predicted. He predicted 7 dollar a gallon gas (when at the time it was about 2.50). He predicted high inflation (at the time it was much lower). He predicted a recession, he predicted people would be angry, he predicted runaway rampant crime.

So it's not surprising how in just 2 short years those predictions have come true. And it should come as no surprise that Americans are doing what they have to do to combat the current policies. Look on the bright side. with more people moving to places with lower prices, that means more people will be able to afford chess.com.

I somewhat agree but also somewhat disagree. Here are a few arguments for both sides. People who read this can choose their own opinions, but this is just my say.

1. To be fair, they may be hiring more employees for site GUI, lessons, better content, streams, etc. !

2. Just a reminder, not all the money that goes to the site goes directly to the owner, lots goes back into the website.

3. Being a millionaire nowadays is nothing if you live in a big city like New York, Toronto, LA...

4. Lichess is always there (I like chess.com more for personal reasons but still...)

5. At the end of the day, it's a business. Why aren't you disgusted at Elon Musk continually ramping up sales of pre-orders on Teslas that might never come?

6. It's optional, no obligation to purchase. And also, don't go with an argument about regulation. I'm sorry but regulation my a**. This world works in a way that services are offered. If you don't like them, go to another site. If you do, you have to stick with their rules. That's how the world works, and unless you can change that, don't complain.

A few reasons for OP's side:

1. How can you make the value of the EXACT same content (except for a few more new lessons a month) higher?

2. Chess.com is already quite expensive considering alternatives that are free are "almost" as good as them.

3. Money is scarce for some people. They're just playing chess as a hobby, and don't want to dump their money.
