Chess.com Slowness (Sept 14 2016)

We are currently experiencing a strange issue with our hosting company where there is a 14 second delay in their network. We are looking into it (and are extremely irritated and frustrated with them). Sorry! I will post an update when we have it fixed.

ok

Seems to be better now

The pages loaded very slowly, painfully slowly.  But oddly enough, Live Chess seemed even faster than usual during that time.

Just gave me a reason to do a malware scan on my system.. I thought it was me...  Wink

RonaldJosephCote

I thought it was me too. I started running a scan, clearing my cookies, etc, etc.

I hope you saved me some.

Is it possible that this issue is responsible for the following behavior I noticed today in two browsers?  Here's what was happening:

  • Go to my home page
  • Click on a club link.
  • Nothing happens. Not even a hint that anything is getting loaded.
  • Click again.
  • Nothing happens.
  • Click 10 times more, verbally offend the computer with assorted implications about its ancestry.
  • You guessed it -- still noting happens.
  • Click on the URL field in the browser, notice that it contains correct URL for the club.
  • Click the "reload" control.
  • Now it loads OK...

"I verbally offend the computer with assorted colorful implications". Surprised                                    You too?Wink Same here. Pirates have been known to do that alot. We should talk.

Great! Please check the scripting of Chess.com! JS specifically! That may help the server side! I don't know really lol

RonaldJosephCote

Reason #3;  You've heard of self-driving cars?  V3 will have self-written threadsSurprised                                                                                                                                                              WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? Undecided

RonaldJosephCote

Oh look, Chess.com speeds up when they have no sense of humor heh?Wink

RonaldJosephCote

Hey Pirate!Yell   I didn't hi-jack the thread. YOU DID, with your off the wall comment of, "   verbally offend the computer with assorted implications ".   I post jokes here to provide some degree of joy and laughter to the 15 million members and Staff here. They have miserable lives and miserable days. So maybe I can bring them 30 secs, or 15 secs of levity and a smile. I can only assume your one of those DEPLORABLE trump supporters. Don't try to score brownie points with Eric while letting "estenssoro" SPAM numerous threads. That's why I don't put any more money into this site, or purchase premium accounts for people. A lot of good people have left because for every mod who thinks something's not appropriate, 5 other mods think its OK. If I want to talk to Eric, I'll do it on LinkIn. You remind me of 2nd Lt. Davis. When I was 21 I wasn't sapost to have "unauthorized reading material" on post while guarding nuclear weapons. I had the "Lord Of The Rings" by Tolkien. He came around to post check one night, took one look at it and thought I was reading the Bible. 22 Veterans commit suicide EVERY day because of people like you. Since your just an errand boy, do you think Eric has enough liability insurance for such an event. I think we should test that theory. What do you think Dr of humor?Yell I didn't open your PM yet. I did resign my current games. Consider yourself "verbally offended with a few colorful implications". Unlike fantasychesspro, I won't DARE you to mute me. I'll go into self-mute mode for a few days. Have a crappy day. Enjoy your miserable job.

We aren't here to restrict anyone's fun. But sometimes one person's fun becomes another person's annoyance.  The ToS is extremely clear on this but for the most part we've been hesitant to evoke those rules stringently, trying insteadr to find a happy medium or something workable for most members without being too restrictive.

The ToS states:
You agree to not use the Service to:

  • post any comments, text, messages, or links in the forums or any public comments that is off topic or irrelevant to the purpose and content of the original content, game, article, blog, or forum topic;
  • disrupt the normal flow of dialogue or otherwise act in a manner that negatively affects other users' ability to engage in real time exchanges;

Attacking mods publicly is definitely not the way to get a point across whether that point is justifiable or not.

C'mon, Ron, it doesn't matter (it's a luck you are not guarding those nukes right now, though).

Thanks, Erik! I can confirm that loading chess.com pages was very slow at the time of your post. For me, ever since some few minutes later already, things have been back to normal quick speed.

The post-mortem: Our host's anti-abuse device detected some DDoS attacks, and their traffic mitigation kicked in in a very unintelligent way, and it was artificially adding 14 second delays. Ummmm, not cool. That's been disabled for re-evaluation.

Rich_McDermott_75

Thanks for the update Eric.

chess_kebabs

The host's system got nuked?

Pulpofeira

Ron did fall asleep on the controls when Faramir started dating Eowin...
