Chess in other languages

Hi.  I haven't found a post about this here, but if there is one, somebody tell me where.  I love chatting with people during games, and enjoy meeting people from other countries/cultures.  I also enjoy different languages, and have a fair vocabulary in German, Italian and a smattering of Russian.

There are plenty of online translation sites, and I can find words for most chess pieces (though the bishop is a hard one, since the online translators assume your asking about a clergyman).  But it's harder to find words like mate, check, stalemate, fork, pin, castling, gambit, sacrifice, opening, endgame, draw, etc.

Does anybody know of a chess terminology translator, or could we build one here by everybody posting various words in their native languages (and maybe an explanation of what the word literally means)?  It would be a great way to learn a little about chess in other cultures.

Not a bad idea.

If there is a need for translation it is easy to contact the chess federation of any nation and in all probability you would get reply with the needed information.

Well, I can give you Italian translation:

Check = Scacco

Mate = Matto (Checkmate = Scacco matto)

Fork = Forchetta

Pin = Inchiodatura

Castling = Arrocco (to castle = arroccare)

Gambit = Gambetto

Sacrifice = Sacrificio

Opening = Apertura

Middlegame = Mediogioco

Endgame =  Finale

Draw = Parità

Pieces:

Pawn = Pedone

King = Re

Queen = Regina/Donna (both are fine)

Bishop = Alfiere

Knight = Cavallo

Rook = Torre

I'm waiting for the moment when all of us we'll agree that mankind needs a rationally constructed language, not belonging to any particular tribe or culture, to be used on the web, international gatherings and so on. Glosa is my proposal. Esperanto, Vollapuk, don't seem, to me, so fit as Glosa. Everyone may go on speaking national languages. Glosa just intends to be an IAL (International Auxiliary Language).

In Russian bishop is слон

In a chess club. 50 players. For 3 hours, the only sound is the ticking of the clock.

We don't need words to communicate. The chess game is the conversation. I can actually see the gears turning in my opponent's head. I can see what he is thinking before he thinks it.

Almost all arts are like chess.

Ballet. Body-language. No spoken languages.

Sports. Same thing. American football, baseball, basketball. All without language.

Movies start off as silent movies. They still retain that silent film DNA.

Ironically, languages are not good medium to communicate.

The Russians communicate fine, by beating everybody in chess, year after year.

Language is not just words.

Language is meaning. That is something computers cannot do for you. That is something you have to do for yourself.

When having difficulty communicating. Go back the root of everything. Speak in an elementary, child-like manner.

Blade, the Day Walker. Day Walker. It is very simple.

Money. That is abstraction. Gold, or silver. That's concrete. Aliens from another planet can understand that. French: Argent. Silver. Ag = the atomic symbol for silver.

You speak in that way, people everywhere can understand you.

One dollar, once upon a time was one real silver dollar. (until Nixon went off the gold standard.)

When you say silver, argent (Ag), everyone understands.

The Chinese have a perfect word for "movies": 電影 Electric Shadow. The meaning is perfect. Everyone in the world, and in the universe, can understand its meaning in any language.

Speaking of ballet.

Ballet has solved this problem centuries ago. All ballet terminologies are in French in every country in the world.

Jujitsu caught up to this idea too. Instead of using Brazilian calques (Brazil revitalized Jujitsu), they go back to the original Japanese terms, or calques of Japanese terms.

I think we can do it for chess. Use English, but go back to the original meanings, and calque from the original meanings.

Bishop = Elephant

Rook = Chariot

Checkmate = The king is dead.

Pawn = foot soldier

Queen is fine as Queen. We don't have to go back to Advisor.

Etc . . .

รุกฆาต = checkmate.
