The "CashPal" slot...it's an alternative to PayPal for those who prefer to use cash. It was designed and introduced by a joint venture between PayPal, Barclays, Packard Bell and Microsoft. Mine works great!

Sometimes I think I am the only person in the world who likes this show. No one has heard of it despite the fact it is awfully funny.

Are you kidding, cj? I don't know what to do for another 25 days (I guess there are always reruns...)

Hey ashandpikachu, at the risk of bring this thread back on topic, I feel like I was in a similar situation when I was a kid.  No there was no internet but I probably wouldn't've had it if there was.  I grew up not that far from one of the best chess clubs in the country (The Marshall), and a very very good local one (The Capablanca), but I'm shure I wouldn't have been allowed to join.

I saved my allowance to buy chess books, and played with my friends.

If your goal is to get better, there are ways-- and I'll spam for one of my groups soon enough.  The "perks" of buying a membership are just one of the ways you can use chess.com to get better.  Joining a group that plays a lot of good vote chess where the moves are discussed and the members helpful is one way.  There are a lot of groups here that are geared towards that, others that are geared specifically at getting better.  There's tactics groups, endgame groups, groups focused on specific openings, etc.

I have a group that is all about studying classic chess books.  It's called GSC (Group Study Chess) and you're welcome to join it.  We're working through Tarrasch's 300 Games of Chess right now.  I'm trying to build the group up, as it was dormant for a long time.  Other books we'll go through might be Nimzowitch's My System, Euwe's many great books, Fischer's 60, etc.  It will take a while to get through 1 book, but it's a start.  The games are put up in diagrams, and they can be discussed even if you don't have the book, hopefully the discussion would encourage one to grab the book.  Wow, that is a spammy post.

My point is that you can get better without the paid membership.  But, you have to balance your priorities, chess, homework, chess, exercise, chess, chores around the house, chess, that part-time job, chess, walk the dog, chess, quick nap before school-- that sort of thing.
