Great feature!

Everything works just fine; castling, en passant, underpromoting, all the technical stuff is perfect.

The only thing I can think of is that there is no list of moves, so you don't know for sure whose move it is unless you remember the last move or try out to see what it'll let you do.  Also, you can't see how you got to the current position.

Those are a couple of suggestions that might help improve it, but it's running perfectly.  Everything works great.

You guys have really been doing a good job lately, with Live Chess, Chess TV, and now this thing...

I doubt I'm going to actually use this but I would suggest making a way to remove pieces better, I can't figure it out... Or make a tutorial.

It seems as if the game's move list works for the "Game Editor" but not for "Analysis Board" and "Position Setup."

It works!

If you try to set up the board, and then paste a bad FEN (such as the string "a", but I did this with partial FENs, too), you get a badly worded error message (it includes the name of an internal object... either remove that or identify it as internal information for the user to report to you) and then the board goes blank. Once that happens, there appears to be no way to get your kings back without exiting the page and returning.

Also, when you paste in a PGN, it asks if you'd like to replace the current game information because you will loose your current game on there.

A little spelling error.

Since the overhaul, I can't solve the puzzles. Clicking on the board does not open the board in a new window to allow you solve the puzzle as before. Please, fix this.

Also, can not play online.

Thanks guys/gals for the great job.

small point erik but i tried it with a fen already on the clipboard. clicked on create from fen and then had to use Ctrl + V to  get the clipboard into the dialogue box. i think that if the clipboard already contains a fen then it should be pasted automatically.

keep up the good work :o)

unfortunately this doesn't work with all browsers :(

two remarks:

1) When starting to analyze on the board with the default settings, which include "enforce legal moves", it was still possible to make illegal moves when analyzing on this board for me. Only when I unclicked and then reclicked this option it started enforcing legal moves.

[edit: this was so when I first tried it. When I tried the analysis board for the second time, it enforced legal moves from the start with the standard setting.]

2) I would expect the "New Board" button to create a new empty board. However, clicking this button creates a board with the initial position just as does the button "Initial Position".

[or maybe the "New Board" button is supposed to do something else, such as opening up an additional new window with another analysis board? If so, this has not been working for me so far.]

Just click "Position Setup" -- leaves only Kings on board.  Remove pieces by dragging them off side of board.

Now I don't have to load Shredder or Sigma Chess Hiarcs just to set up positions on my Mac. Even loads individual PGNs by cut-and-paste. Works great in Firefox.

I really appreciate this handy new widget -- thanks again, chess.com!

anonym, thanks, I have seen that one can obtain an almost empty board by going to "Position Setup" and clicking on "Clear Board".

I just wondered about the intended purpose of the button "New Board" in my second remark above.

I like it!

Just two things:

How is this going to be the puzzle editor?  I don't see anywhere to make the puzzle...

Where can you find this? I don't find it listed anywhere...

doesn't work with puzzles yet.

not listed on the site until the bugs are out.

Now I have understood the difference between the buttons "Initial Position" and "New Board".

If one starts the analysis at a position pasted by FEN, the initial position is the position from the FEN, while "new board" sets up all the pieces in the initial position of a standard game.

So the button "New Board" is working perfectly as intended :-)

Dear ilmago, good question -- I assumed that the difference between "inital position" and "new board" involved "game editor." That appears not to be the case.

However, trying to establish this assumption, I discovered that Game Editor would accepts only first ply (white move) on 44th move of a PGN with 60 moves. The 44th move of PGN that I cut-and-pasted is 44.d8(Q) -- white promotes pawn. And it is not that Analysis Board cannot cope with a PGN with more than 44 moves because it did play through a game of 49 moves. It appears to have a problem reading PGN with a promoted pawn.

In any case, I would use my programs to play through and with database games. I would be using to Analysis Board to work with positions and their variations shown in my books without having to load original entire games in sofware databases (that is, when I want to work with only the position and its variations).

From Analysis Board that opens in default start-of-game (initial/new) setup, go to Position Setup, and ... set up your position. Switch to Analysis Board and play a sequence of moves (variation), and when you want to restore your the position that you set up in Position Setup, click "Initial Position". Repeat as many times as you desire to work with variations based on the position that you set up. When you want to set up an entirely new position to analyze, click New Board, then Position Editor-->Clear Board.
