Chess.com FAQs and Discussion on Cheating

The transparency is definitely a good thing.  I fully understand and support the rationale for not sharing detection methodologies, but lack of visibility into the results was probably part of why some thought no action was being taken.

It also lends creedence my belief that I have not played a single cheater, largely because of my current rating level.

Oh nooo........ I never thought of this as an issue until I saw four of my current games frozen today. I am less than 2200 and play less than 10-15 games at a time.

one guy was playing 67!- amazing amount of work if he used an engine on all of them. ( i did enjoy one game particularly- lost to some pretty good moves- and wonder what program was used?Wink). I wonder how it feels when the guy who lost congradulated and commented on how strong a chess player you really are..........

Also, does it really matter if your opponent cheated- you get to play a pretty strong opponent for free................

No, it's the opposite of irony. When people start a sentence saying "It's ironic that..." it almost never is.

I agree with broze. If it turned out that one of my opponents had used an engine, I wouldn't care. That would just save me the time of analyzing my moves - their engine had already demonstrated the errors in my ideas. Worse things have happened, I think I'd be just fine.

I'm quite happy that 2 of my latest opponents are on the cheaters list on post 51 and I thought I had played in a good level against them, despite losing the 4 games... Good to know,I'm not that useless...Cool

On on of my LIVE games 3-3, I noticed that my opponets time keeps adding up during the game.. he was down to his last 40 seconds . Everytime I move it adds up another 5 seconds.. Was he using some type of software to add time? Just curious.. Thanks

nope. it's called lag.

handyman1965, Look at the bar above your opponent's name. It's either green, orange, or red. That gives you some idea how bad their lag is. If this bothers you, you could use this information to avoid playing 'red-bars', for example.

Another oft misunderstood issue that could benefit greatly from some transparency.

How is it the opposite of irony? I find that quite ironic.

Wow.  I didn't know they had busted so many people.  Apparently, I have only played one cheater on that list and lost to him both times.  I was certainly suspicious when a 1600 started to crush me.

Still way off. Irony requires an unexpected incongruity. Acount_Closed having his or her account closed is almost the precise opposite of this. That's how. In this case I don't mind answering your question since a lot of people have no idea what the word means and use it anyways, but in the future, just use google.

It's important to recognize the difference between activity you feel may suspicious and actual evidence, but if you do in fact have a strong reason to believe it then that's why there's a Report Abuse link at the bottom of each page.

LordJones3rd

how did Melanerz cheat?

Zhane

He had 3 other members using his e-mail adress if I remember correctly.

what a sad life it must be to be a cheater..sure you have a high rating on the site-and then you go play an OTB out in public and get embarrased. What is the point?? You're not learning to play chess better, you're just watching an engine play a strong player. And to what end? Imagine your rating got higher and higher. Then one day someone invites you to a game in public or someone recognizes you because you are talking about your chess 'rating' and invites you to a game. Then they take you to the cleaners.

If someone wants to cheat against me and use a computer, do it! I play chess because I love it, against computer, human, chimpanzee, whatever.. I play because I love the game. As my dear old grandma use to say, cheaters only cheat themselves!

It seems kind of odd to me that certain players get off the website for about two minutes every time that they get buried, and then come back with a sudden genius move, if they were that good I couldn"t have buried them in the first place.

They might have been thinking, besides there are no genius moves in bad position. If the position is bad, it becomes worse with every move or stays that way. Watch the engines match, for example.

If they manage to find the move, which actually turns everything into their favour, that means one thing: you judged the position wrongly.
