If you are talking about turn-based chess, then no, you can move in and out freely, I do it all the time.

you can access different parts of the site while playing. just don't exit the live chess window while in a game.
If I am in a middle of chess game on chess.com and from the web page that I am playing my current chess game, I access another page on the same site (example: Events) will that affect my current chess game, or maybe even make me lose it?
