if chess.com had 1 million members then shouldn't there be at least 500,000 games if one member challenges another and then there is a big tournament on all of chess.com taking part

no, not so. because only about 80,000 members are actually playing chess here.

the rest are here for other reasons - using the site for facebook - posting photos, reading and learning about chess without playing etc.

there are well over half a million games played though, probably more than 20 million in the last two years.

At AM2:30 Thursday the halfway point between those two guesses should be reached.
