In my opinion, positional chess is a quite important and interesting part of the game and you shouldn't wait too long with teaching students positional apects of the game, but I would say on his playing level (which I just can estimate based on the given game) tactics have priority, because you need a sound tactical foundation before you are able to understand positional concepts.
If you want to introduce/make him interested in positional ideas/concepts, I would suggest the concept of imbalances after Jeremy Silman because I think it's a quite understandable and logic way to treat/understand positions in a positional way.

Hi guys! I recently started coaching an 8 year old kid. This is my first time coaching. I'm wondering what other coaches do to get their students more interested in positional chess. When I played him last week, most of our games went something like this:
Do you guys know good introductory positional games? Or should I just work on tactics with him?
