Could I get some coaching advice

Hi guys! I recently started coaching an 8 year old kid. This is my first time coaching. I'm wondering what other coaches do to get their students more interested in positional chess. When I played him last week, most of our games went something like this:

Do you guys know good introductory positional games? Or should I just work on tactics with him?

In my opinion, positional chess is a quite important and interesting part of the game and you shouldn't wait too long with teaching students positional apects of the game, but I would say on his playing level (which I just can estimate based on the given game) tactics have priority, because you need a sound tactical foundation before you are able to understand positional concepts.

If you want to introduce/make him interested in positional ideas/concepts, I would suggest the concept of imbalances after Jeremy Silman because I think it's a quite understandable and logic way to treat/understand positions in a positional way.

I think I'm going to show him games like Nimzowitsch Tarrasch 1914, which are positional but also have some fun calculation

If the games went something like that, I would focus some more on opening principles. In that particular example you can show that bringing out the queen early, usually isn't a good idea as she becomes a target.

yes, he is most definitely rated less than 1000.  If he is playing openings like that he is most likely rated 200-300 USCF.

Like Martin said, I would teach him the basic opening princples, and show him Paul Morphy games to demonstrate the basic ideas (I'll give a shout out to Frisco del Rosario's "A First Book of Morphy).  Teach him the first few moves of the four knights.

Your next problem will be teaching him not to attack until he is developed, so make sure to spend time on the fried liver attack and loli variation.

I'd then focus on tactics and endgames.

Should you be coaching if you still fall for the Scholar's mate?

You do realise he missed the checkmate of 4. Qxf7#, yeah? The Scholar's Mate (and defending against it) is probably something to cover pretty early on...

Hahahahahahahaha oops. It wasn't the actual game, I just threw up what I thought I remembered an otb blitz game from a week ago looking like. I am USCF 1815, and I hopefully wouldn't fall for that. I totally should have double checked the diagram I was posting though Laughing
