PLEASE CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT METHOD OF DECIDING THE WINNER! THIS COULD END UP WITH SOMEONE COMPLETELY UNDESERVING WINNING. ANYONE COULD EASILY SET UP A MACRO SO ADD VIEWS + LIKES. PLEASE, HAVE A PANNEL OF JUDGES OR SOMETHING, THIS CONTEST WILL TURN DIRTY AND WILL ULTIMATELY BE THE PERSON WHO BOOSTED THEIR VIEWS THE MOST! ALSO, PEOPLE WILL DISLIKE OTHER PEOPLE'S VIDEOS IN ORDER TO RAISE THEIR CHANCES OF WINNING! PLEASE, HAVE IT BE A STAFF JUDGED EVENT! OR A PLAYER JUDGED EVENT. (DO THIS ONCE PER IP ADDRESS OR ELSE PEOPLE WILL ONCE AGAIN BE INCLINED TO START MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS AND CHEAT!)

Agreed. I am a member of several forums wherein this sort of "gaming" the system happens, and it's seriously unfair.

GREAT IDEA GUYS! YOU GUYS DON'T HAVE TO OFFER A PRIZE FOR THIS TYPE OF THING, LET THE TRUE FANS OF CHESS.COM HANDLE THIS AND TO PRODUCE THINGS SOLELY FOR IMPROVING THE PLAYERBASE. THIS WILL ULTIMATELY IMPROVE THE FINAL PRODUCT INTO SOMETHING AMAAAAAAZING!@#$!#$

Disagreed. If I put in the kind of work I'm planning on for this sort of thing, the cash would be a nice incentive.

If I get to have 50% of the vote, then I will honour what I stated above....$1,000 Aud additional.

Or I can just be a part of the competition, and you wouldn't want that...! I couldn't possibly lose even if it were rigged.....!!! I am truly that good.

I do like the idea of having judges because I have a life and have no time to "Cheat" by creating extra users on youtube yo.

That’s right! We’re offering $1,000 USD for the best promotional video!

Here’s how it works:

1. You create an amazing/unforgettable/hilarious promotional video for Chess.com.

2. Upload it to YouTube and then post the link below!

On January 1, 2012 we will give $1,000 to the person with the highest number of “positive” YouTube views. Positive views are calculated as total views x the % of “likes”. Example: 1,000 views x 92% likes = 920 positive views.

That’s it. No holds barred. Create any video you want. Create as many videos as you want. Make it informational and explain the site. Or dance around in a hotdog suit. Or make a mini movie. Or sing a song. Doesn’t matter. Get your friends to watch it. Get it posted on Reddit or Digg. All you need to do is generate positive views of your video!

You can download our logo here.

You can follow the contest right here, in this forum thread!

Ok! You have till New Years – GO! Have fun and make it awesome!

The common failure point of nearly all videos uploaded so far is that they use copyrighted material. You can't just take someone's song, or pictures you grabbed from Google Images and put them into your video. That's a violation of intellectual property rights.

If chess.com were to use a video containing such material, they'd either need to purchase rights to the material (for a Kelly Clarkson song, it's a five or six digit sum) or risk lawsuits.

I dont believe chess.com said that they are going to actually use any of these videos as official videos tis just a contest. And will improve publicity for chess.com without enfringing on copyright

It's still copyright infringement. It's just not chess.com's problem, it's the uploaders. With minor exceptions for fair use, you can't just steal intellectual property.

Of course, in the internet age, no one cares. However, chess.com rewarding copyright violations is legally and morally dubious. You can't take credit (let alone money) for someone elses work.

It's a bit unfair that reposting Pixar's work will generate more positive feed back than a home made video, and hence the former is to win the prize.

You can find more information about copyright and the definition of fair use in YouTube's very own copyright centre.
