Does Pompousness Exist?
On an unrelated note I would like to say that I am beginning a campaign of forum posting that will undoubtedly enlighten you all, because at the end of the day I am just better than the rest of you. Your welcome.
(I added a smiley face to show that I am trying to be ironically pompous)
Perhaps I need my glasses checked as I thought this tread was about the Pampas way way down South ( anyone seen any Gouchos riding around lol ). I was looking forward to having everyone join in on a couple of verses of: I am el Rancho Grande aye-yei-yei-yei-yei-yeiiiii ! And I do so very much love a sing-along, curses foiled again lol.
Shouldn't it be pomposity rather than pompousness? Really people, let's step it up a bit. These forums aren't up to a satisfactory level of discourse for the educated among us.
I received a PM from a person who asked me to relay this:
I think some people here are nasty cretins for accusing others of being pompous. It's easy to judge others and call them out when you are wearing the mask of anonymity. I think people should man up and put their real name on their posts when they slander other people.
Name withheld upon request.
I can't believe anyone would anonymously accuse someone of being a nasty cretin! (Well, actually, I can....)
Hypocrisy much?
Seriously, it's a Latinate word. Anybody of sophistication knows that in English you add -ity to Latinate adjectives to make them nouns. Who would use -ness? Those are for Germanic adjectives.
I believe both are acceptable. While you're right that -ity is only applicable to Latinate adjectives, -ness is much less restrictive. Clarity and clearness is another good example.

so was it talent or hard work?
I dunno, which one are we saying doesn't exist nowadays?
My computer's actually pretty talented at brute-force calculation, but no matter how hard it works it just can't seem to grasp the concept of strategy.
For that, I rely on Jeremy Silman.

I just assumed it was too hilarious to not be a joke.

You sure, despite the different writing styles, that they're not the same dude? That particular missive is very similar to the former member's writing style.
The party of the first part, in alleging pompousness in the demeanour in the party of the second part, is asserting .....oh sod it, I cant keep this up. Its the internet - pompousness is one of the less offensive behavioural traits people can have here.
Edit: I just scrolled back to the start of the thread. Why didnt I do that first?
I'm fairly certain universities do not claim some people are inferior to others. Perhaps, in other periods of time, some people were considered inferior (e.g. African American slaves), but today, many countries including Canada and the United States do not believe in "inferiors."
Oh yeah? Then how come I had to wait until Thursday to register when I was an underclassman?
More satire than just irony, but yes, it's hardly genuine.
What's funny is having to explain it's satire.
or even its satire...lol Yes, once again chessplayers and humor are only distantly related. If the Hindenburg had been filled with chessplayers, that announcer probably would've cried out: "Oh, the Vulcanity!"
I, certainly, admire your bravery. That took real guts.
