Get rid of Vacation?

Hi. I am a relatively new member and maybe this is an old topic, but I would advocate for geting rid of the vacation option. I play in the 1 day per move category. Perhaps there are other categories where it is more appropriate but... I consider it rude to suddenly have your opponent go "on vacation" in the middle of a game, especially as they are about to run out of time. I have experienced this several times already.  If you can't finish, don't start. If you have to stop, just resign, maybe with a comment. You will make up the rating when you play your next 100 games! This particular game is not special. Don't make someone else wait on you longer than agreed to. Thanks.

You agreed to wait for them if they went on vacation.

Premium members go on vacation automatically if they are about to lose on time.  Thought you'd like to know...

What do you mean "agreed to wait for them"? Contractually? I wasn't given an option.

I guess it means whenever you play a daily game, you let your opponent the ability to have vacation and use it.

Don't like it? Don't play it. Play live chess. If you wanna about your moves and not worry about time, play rapid like 15|10 or 30|0 or any long time control.

Vacation is a part of daily chess. Live with it.

Its not so much to ask. Make a move a day.  Start the game, finish the game on time. Ok I can see there are supporters for this as well. Then give me the ability to refuse the vacation and get a draw. Thanks.

If someone has to go somewhere for business or if it's a family thing, just don't worry about it. Sometimes you have to hit that vacation button. No big deal.

Your only real option is to sign up for Daily tournaments with no vacation allowed. There have been suggestions in the past about adding a no vacation option on seeks but I don't know if that is likely to be added.

Can you imagine how much whining there would be if there were no vacation?

Vacation is also abused by some. I've had players go on vacation for a week or more yet were logged in every day. Guess their time to play was short.

Yes you were, you have the option not to play correspondence chess!  Just play live if a user going on vacation passes you off that much.

If they are down a Queen and rook and merely stopping the game to delay the inevitable, then you have a legit complaint.  But if it is still a game, even if he is down a pawn or two with compensation, then he has the right to go on vacation just like you do.  I will likely be on vacation late July/Early August.  If the opponent does not like it, don't care!  Not my problem!

Vacation does not equate to not logging on.  I go on vacation every summer for about 2 weeks.  I am usually away from home (where my books are), and away from work and everything else to give myself a mental break or to play in a chess tournament over the board.  If I am playing in a tournament, I am focused on that, not the garbage here on the internet.  If I am doing something else, like gambling in a casino, I may go to a Steak and Shake (or some other cheap place after losing money in the casino) and might log in here to do some light chatting on the forum or play a game or two of mindless blitz.  Does not mean I am here to figure out correspondence chess positions.

So yes, there are legit cases of logging in and yet being on vacation!

When I go on vacation I go the the volcanos in hawaii and sit inside em for a bit, I still have time to play chess

wtf

I am playing a daily game and I won a piece. He's down to less than an hour, then he goes on "vacation".

How is this different than letting your clock run down when you're dead lost? Isn't it poor sportsmanship? I have to wait 11 days for this guy to move now, when he probably should have resigned already.

That's not considered abuse. Why would it?

zugzwanger99

vacation is more often abused than used correctly in my experience. if you know youre going away then don't sign up for a tournament with 10 simultaneous games. players shouldn't have to think the little tourney they signed up for might drag on for actual years. its pathetic. i only play in no vacation tournaments as i became so frustrated with opponents. if i time out (which i really try not to) so be it. i lose a few points. as a side note i've come across another phenomenon recently where a very strong player enjoys having many games going (some i've seen have well over 100 daily games going) they time out in many of them and they get zapped down to a low rating. then they enter tournaments as a ringer and create imbalances within groups. another little nugget of frustration. and then theres the cheaters. lol. so many annoying people on the internet. i just try to play the game right, get better and push on

Felis_Domesticus

Some people have situations such as work that require them to go on vacation.

In my opinion vacation is abusive,  at least make it something your opponent has to consent to

Well you already do since you have the option as well when you play a correspondence game, and sometimes you can’t meet up, in this case online, because of work, or any other important things.
