How do leagues work?

Pardon the basic question. I end up enrolled in leagues without my knowledge, and somehow accumulate trophies. How does this work?

Thank you. God that is complicated! Why do rapid wins earn more points than bullet and blitz?

More time is potentially spent in the games and the idea was to make the different time controls roughly comparable in the number of trophies given for time spent.
